From Cardiff Central to Grangetown, then beyond Barry on the Vale of Glamorgan Line, there seemed to to a number of places where vegetation was “brushing” against the side of the carriage on the outgoing journey

If the side of a carriage gets scratched, has the train company any recourse against Network Rail in the same way a motorist would have if their car got scratched ?

On the Heart of Wales Line, I think Transport for Wales could probably charge Network Rail for lineside vegetation management. A Class 150 with its hopper windows open makes a very effective strimmer. The interior of the train acts as the grass box!

Numerous IETs on GWR have scratch marks on their coach body sides, sustained while passing overgrown / non Managed vegetation and tree branches, the Par / Newquay line is particularly one of the worst culprits in the SW.

Here is a Question for an Ergonomist..
does a train have to exert more energy/ use more fuel to push through the atmosphere/air when the lineside is full of trees etc. compared to an open, ie no tree infested area ahead of it ??
a layman says yes; thus causing more energy, wear & tear and fuel to be used.
