lineside gang hut

is there anyone else out there that has a gang hut as their den

my den is in the cutting inbetween goosehill junction and oakenshaw south junction.

since doing work on it to make it inhabital i have found; chair clips, those little rubber mats that under the rails, a LMS lamp, rail chair, a file, wooden signal base and thousands of those concrete sections they put cables in but no lids for them.

Is this within the boundary fence? I'd hazzard a guess and say you probably shouldn't be there in the first place anyway!:roll:

no it's fine the cutting has been derelict for 30 years they took the track up in the 80's and since has become a bit flooded

A bit flooded? Looks very flooded to me!

Looks like a cool hangout though. I remember when I was kid, the best we had was a very rough and ready sort-of treehouse. We nailed together some wood from some old pallets to make a sort of roof which we suspended from the branches of our 'den' tree (a large weeping willow if I recall correctly) using ropes. It kept the rain off us!!!!

well sort of, it's wide but shallow and the majorority of the ballast has been pushed into piles at the side

25-30 years ago...

"Lineside" shed on the long-lifted DD&C line.

We arrived one summer evening to find the local landowner/farmer standing beside a slowly burning pile of ashes. He'd been told that a group of "teenagers" had been using it as a drinking den. We were between 8&10 years old!

He was genuinely sorry, and as we pushed our Grifters along the former track, he told us to come back the next evening... He'd built us a new "den" out of straw bales and a tarpaulin just inside his field - ours to play in until the "tattie-howkin" holidays were over.

Nope, no cider. And no farmers wife with wicker baskets of boiled eggs, ginger beer or ham.

We had to go to the Spar in Doune for our sweeties and juice.

Very interesting...there's some superb timber huts down the GW line...seem to be every mile (what was the frequency?) which are now returning to nature. Timber covered in ivy...will all be swept away if and when elrctrification comes, mind.
So on that basis they'll still be there, decaying and reminding us of the real railway in 20 years' time. LOL
