Bolton News

COMMUTERS faced travel chaos after a fire at a garage forced Network Rail to cancel trains.

The fire started at a garage, which contained gas cylinders in Gardner Street, Pendleton at 1.15am on Monday.

A 100m cordon was put in place and part of the railway between Bolton and Salford Crescent was closed until 7.15pm when the cordon was reduced.

A spokesman for the British Transport Police said two trains were cancelled, two journeys had partial cancellations and 14 trains were delayed.

Somewhere, not in London
The problem is, them two trains that where cancelled carry a lot of passengers, and theres no spare space on anything into Manchester until well... 9:02 for victoria you can just about get a seat and for Piccadilly, well, never. It's always standing only until 9pm tonight.

On services from Preston, I believe the early trains were diverted or cancelled.

Everything seemed to be back to normal by the time of my service ex-Leyland at 07:22 though. Somebody did mention it was one of the first (or the first) services routed normally today.

Luckily passenger numbers are lower this week with Christmas on the way, so our train was not rammed despite the earlier disruption.

Made worse by a bridge strike that closed the Southport line this morning as well!

Didn't quite close the line, couple of cancellations but my train at 11.40ish ran to time right up till Wigan where we were held for almost 20 mins as a 'train was occupying a platform' at wallgate. Had a good run past the ticket checks at the top to North Western where thankfully the 12.09 to Euston ran late

When I got to Wallgate at 10:20 they were turning people away from Southport services, my train to Manchester left 10 minutes late because train crew was stranded.

on the plus side 156 on the way out and 150 on the way back, loving the stock reallocations, much smoother ride with less crowding. Couple of lads even said 'why cant buses be this comfortable?'.

The line was closed in the early hours of the morning with overnight traffic sent via Atherton. I'm told the line reopened around 07:15. By 11:40 the service will have recovered although there was a points failure at Wigan around midday.
