Lineside Equipment Question

Hi

I've always been meaning to find out what a piece of particular line side equipment is, and I can't seem to find out by Googling, so here goes. Forgive the description, but hopefully someone will know what I mean...

They aren't all over the network, usually around junctions or sidings
They are about 3 or 4 feet tall
Look like a thin solar panel, or a thin line of numbers (can't really make it out from the train window), on a metal pole / stick and are usually deployed in sets for a particular length of track.
They are in a T shape, with the solar panel looking (might be lights, or other sensors - just looks like that to me) thing along the top edge.
They are equally spaced for the segment of track I've seen them on - they are used up and down the network, but can't decide whether its on sidings, stations, points or just randomly placed.

Are they light sensors? Some kind of speed camera system? Train length measuring system? Just interested to find out...

Sounds like the lights on junctions used for when maintenance possessions are on to me.

This sort of thing:

The introduction of permanent lighting at key junctions across the network enables patrolling, inspection and maintenance to be undertaken in the hours of darkness, avoiding disruptive and expensive daylight closures.
