The Portland branch all the way up to Easton. Ruling gradient of 1-56. Would be a great assest to Portland Port whilst 'heritage' trains could also share the line. Climbing out of Weymouth, skirting Portland harbour then running along Chesil beach before clinging to the side of Portland and climbing to Easton giving fantastic views of Weymouth bay and the Jurassic coast. Not a lost cause, just need a good euro lottery win!

The Manifold Valley Railway, with its Standard Gauge stock on Narrow Gauge Wagons, would have been an interesting and very scenic choice for preservation. Indeed, the system was pretty much unique in the UK. Sadly, poor road and mainline rail access would hinder its commercial success.

March to Spalding line, the preservation people would make a mint in track charges today from Schenker and Freightliner

Otherwise, on a smaller level, the line from Pyle into Porthcawl. Porthcawl is a seaside resort sorely missing its old station and a preserved line would be guaranteed a good response especially if it formed part of a "park and ride" scheme to alleviate the parking issues.

Agree. Would rather visit there than Barry as a preference but have to drive as opposed to direct train to the Island. The bus from Bridgend is often poorly timed and takes ages and will thus will take too long to travel for a day out on your doorstep. If it was still on the railway which apparently ran to opposite the beach you would be surprised how popular it would with Valleys people.

Lyme Regis is extremely busy in summer and has totally inadequate car parking. Providing it at Axminster with restored steam railway could be a master stroke!

Well, the viaduct is still in place, and the station building still exists (albeit currently on the mid Hants). How far is Axminster station from the main road ? I wonder whether there would be scope for park and ride along the lines of St Erth - St Ives.

The station is now a doctor's surgery and the station was miles above the beach (I live nearby). So the end of the line would be even further back at the top of the hill. The gradients down to the beach are about 1 in 4 (if not steeper in places). At about the same distance above the town, on the Charmouth side, they already run a park and ride in summer. From a road access point of view this is a better location, as there is direct and safer access off the A35.

The whole idea of the Lyme branch, as a P and R, is thus a complete nonsense, I am afraid. AXM station is about a mile north from the A35 and there is no spare parking there.

The only possible plan would be to run a line from south beyond the A35 junction, otherwise you need a bridge over the A35. Then relatively plain sailing, as these restoration projects go, but then I think Cannington viaduct is bound to be dodgy. It is fundamentally weak. A cycle track is a much more attractive idea however, and could be very popular.
