One line that should be reopened is the line from West Timperley to Partington. A new Station at Partington on the original site then a new station at west Timperley by the Broadheath community hall and Turnbull road. Rebuilding Baguley station just west of Brooks drive. Rebuilding Northenden just west of Sharston road. Rebuilding Cheadle station at its original site. A new station at Bird Hall lane to serve the industrial estate there. You could then provide a stopping service between Partington and Stockport or Piccadilly. This line would provide a train service to a large catchment area that has no service at the present time.

Is there enough capacity at Piccadilly (or Stockport), or would this be better off as a tram service with a higher frequency?

Baguley, Northenden and Cheadle could simply be re-opened and served by Altrincham line services. To Partington given the infrastructure as it is now does look more logical as a fork of the tram line.

Stopping at Partington rather than reopening all the way to Glazebrook does leave a bit of a daft layout with this truncated spur. The problem there of course is Cadishead viaduct. Depending on exactly how bad it is, it's possible that a tram line would make it possible to cheap out on the repairs compared to a full-on heavy rail line, which might make it more likely for something to happen. However, I don't think that would be a very good idea, since (a) it would be bound to need doing again soon and (b) if it's worth doing at all it's worth doing it properly. I also think, though I'm not sure, that the viaduct is already too bad for any kind of mere patching-up to be possible.

There are potential plans for a freight terminal to be built on the old works site. so it would not be a waste of time putting in a line there. If the terminal goes ahead then it would reopen the line across the ship canal. see https://railfuture.org.uk/display2302

If reopening the old line through Partington, it would make sense to extend it all the way to Warrington. I would be fairly certain that about 30% of Partington's commuter traffic is to Warrington, knowing how busy those roads get at rush hour.

The problems are, of course, the Cadishead viaduct, and the capacity at Warrington Central without a dedicated turnback/bay.
