I just got a request to quote form from NWR. It gives ELR, Line I.D. ?? and then the mileage. I assume line id 2100 & 1200 has something to do with the Up & Down lines. This one has got me scratching my head a bit......anyone help?

Is it not prefixed by anything ?? could be the applicable line code in the sectional appendix ?

No, I reckon its been sent by an ex B.R. man thats patiently sitting by his phone as he knows we dont know what it means.....and eventually we will give in and call. its thrown me !

Your assumption is correct. Line ID is used to differentiate between individual lines in the asset register, whilst ELR is the Engineers Line Reference for the route i.e. LEC1 stands for London (Euston) to Crewe anmd the 1 indicates it is the section Euston to Rugby.
BAG stands for "Birmingham and Gloucester" line, and BAG1 relates to the section between Birmingham New St and Kings Norton Jct.
The codes apply to closed lines also, hence LIA refers to the Lincoln Avoiding line between Greetwell Jct and Pyewipe Jct.

And 1200 and 2100 are called T.I.D's in the new Ellipse maintenance system.
Each line has a T.I.D. and the Up Slow might be 1100, the Up Fast 1200, etc. Don't quote me on those numbers, as I have used them as an example. If I was at work today I could have got out a piece of paper with them written on.

Not much to really expand on, ELR is as stated above the Engineers Line Reference, the Track ID denotes Up or Down, Main or Slow etc. Off the top of my head:
1100 - Up Main
2100 - Down Main
3100 or 3400 - Single (Reversible)
1150 and 2150 are the Up and Down Electrics/Suburbans out of Liverpool St, not sure if this applies elsewhere to slow lines

Thanks all, Got it this morning LEC1 1200 is Up Slow, 2100 is Dn Fast.......I still reckon Up & Down makes life easier for surveyors. Learn something every day and I been in this job 10 years !!

THese were often part of the prospectus for building the railway, so you might find a copy in a local record office.
The National Archives has a lot of info about documents stored in Local Records Offices around the country, plus places like the NRM.
For instance I was able to track the plans of the Lancashire Derbyshire and East Coast Railway to the Lincolnshire Archive. I could have visited to look through it but opted to buy a scan on DVD for £15
Try the Gloucester Archives Reference D1950/E8 1845-1867
