There will be no Northern services through Bolton until further notice. This situation is expected to impact rail travel south of Bolton for several weeks and is due to a burst water main and subsequent damage to a railway bridge near Moses Gate.

There was no service planned until 28th August anyway due to engineering work.

If this rumbles on I would assume it will become harder to source buses. School go back around 4th September and the days of industrial action on the 1st and 4th September. I assume replacement veichles are going to be at a premium.

Is the new crossover at Horwich signalled for terminating at Horwich from the north and going back up to Preston? If it is then I think it should be utilised to at least get a rail service to the Lancashire stations on that line if this disruption continues.

So there is no services from Manchester North to Bolton for the foreseeable future?

So what would be the possibility of managing to get to Chorley in about a weeks time. I assume the best way to go would be from Preston and down towards Bolton if there is any sort of service.

Your choices will be either a bus from Manchester or one from Preston, I'm afraid. There are no services on the Preston - Manchester via Chorley & Bolton line at all. See https://www.northernrailway.co.uk/news/improvements/1294-route-improvement-work-around-bolton.

Northern have updated their website saying the current replacement bus will remain in place for the foreseeable future

No services through Bolton until further notice
Northern services through Bolton will not resume on Monday 28 March following*the latest improvement works.**The current replacement bus timetable will*continue to operate*for the foreseeable future, due to further work that is required as a result …

United Utilities now say the water main in question is too badly damaged to repair and that it will take at least ten days to lay a new stretch of the pipe.

Network rail have a roadworks permit to keep the road closed until 30th September

They had posters up already at Leyland station this morning mentioning this problem, so Northern have been on the case pretty quickly to get the news out.

It will make for a pretty terrible run of non-commuting, especially for those at the further end of the rail replacements (Adlington to Leyland). The buses in to Manchester in the morning have been regularly later than timetabled, even with the quieter traffic, so it won't get much better.

If they could have got a few of the remaining Northern services from Preston to Manchester and vv to stop at Leyland (and possibly even Euxton) than that would help to cover those in the Chorley / Buckshaw area. Northern have said that they requested a Leyland stop, but Network Rail didn't approve them. Network Rail claim no request was made by Northern for this in a response to one of my fellow commuters who acts as a bit of an informal rail user group co-ordinator for Leyland and Buckshaw Parkway.

As already mentioned, it will be a challenge to get the required number of replacement coaches once the schools are back. It will be even harder to stick to the bus replacement timelines when the traffic is back to normal levels too.

Passenger levels will be back up to normal again soon too. The usual downturn in commuters during the school holidays, plus people trying to take time to avoid the closures has helped over the scheduled closure. It won't be fun when back up to full volumes.

Obviously things like this are unavoidable when they happen and it will be a challenge to manage around it. Hopefully NR and Northern can find some solutions to go beyond the bus replacement solution currently in place.

Well, better take advantage of the closure to crack on with electrification work then!

I've had to return to Bolton from the airport when the lines were closed, and a tortuous peak-hours bustitution it was too - and that's during the holiday month. Going to be awful when everyone's back at work.

As alluded to, coaches may become difficult to find to carry the thousands of commuters between Manchester and points n-w.

When the scheduled engineering is over, could they not run the trains from Picc/Vic to Farnworth, alight everyone onto RRB's and go to Bolton via the kearsley roundabout - saving everyone the suffering of getting through Manchester's congested centre; and the trains return down the other track?

Or alternatively get everyone to use the Metrolink and run buses from Radcliffe to Bolton thus avoiding Moses Gate?

I don't fancy leaving the airport at 4pm and then taking a RRB from Piccadilly; will try to make it to Salford Crescent by rail and hope there are enough buses with space from there (not holding my breath) and as a last resort at leats Salford Crescent is adjacent to the No8 bus...but that may be effected by long delays @ Moses Gate.

There is a suggestion Northern may run a reduced service through Moses Gate, the sooner we find out the better.

There is a couple of afternoon National Expresses from the airport to Bolton in the late afternoon - but they have to fight the congestion; not sure if they are direct or via the city.

Just shows how badly connected Bolton is to the airport; no direct buses, no alternatives. And we pay peak hour prices for the privilege.

Burst water main...electricity...what could possibly go wrong ;)

But I don't think the electrification will be finished before (a) we leave the EU or (b) Her Maj jacks it in and/or (c) I'm six feet under.

The water is only in one small bit of the line though...

Given that Farnworth station can only be accessed via a narrow residential street, which do you think would generate the least number of complaints?

A) Up to twenty coaches per hour squeezing their way past people's houses every hour from 0600 to 2200 and later on Friday and Saturday evenings.

B) During the same hours, have the passengers from six trains an hour walk for five minutes through the surrounding residential streets to the main road where the current RRB pick up point is and the same number of passengers walk in the opposite direction to their trains.

Is there no way of using Bolton as a terminus for trains from Preston or Wigan? Is this the usual situation or partly down to the changes related to platform 5?

During the Farnworth tunnel works, some of these trains did run into Bolton and terminate. But, if I were the TOCs & Network Rail, I'd keep the current replacement timetables in place and use the time to do more of the engineering work; to save further closures in future

I don't know the immediate area around Farnworth - so Kearsley? There's room on the road but there are a lot of steps I believe. Anyhow I can't see what's wrong with people walking a couple of hundred yards to the main street (as long as disabled have an option such as small vehicle transfer). The side roads will be busy with pedestrians...er, so what?? If we are really struggling with either..then Clifton; that's plenty of room.

Maybe Northern are looking at the metro option (Radcliffe or Bury) and letting pax with rail rickets use that.

A couple of observations.

  • If they are craking on with the electrification presumably the wires won't be energised while there is water about.
  • I have seen water pouring off the Crewe station roof directly onto the 25kV without a flashover.

Running trains to farnworth or any of the intermediate stations is not workable.

There is nowhere for the trains to turn back, so it would be one train from salford/agecroft and then returning, under pilotman.

Which if worked in a similar way to darwin/bolton is actually more time consuming than bus services.

Don't forget that United Utilities was originally formed from the merger of North West Water and Norweb, the electricity REC now split off again as Electricity North West.

My father referred to UU's combination of electricity and water as Flash and Flush.

Couldn't they run two - one on the up and one on the down - and never the twain? One could end up at VIC and the other at PICC. If two pacers did it in tandem you could have a load of passengers actually pleased to see a pacer....

No.

You still have trains travelling from pic/vic to wigan via atherton so the line isnt exclusively used for trains moving in the wrong direction.

It would still require pilotman and would be a signalling nightmare. In fact your idea makes no sense at all.

Buses would be easier and faster.

Far too logical that ;)

I think NR should take advantage of the extra 'free' access they have. They are always complaining they don't get enough. However sadly as pointed out that would be too logical.

Additionally in respect of bussing issues I would still be running trains between Bolton and Blackburn / Preston / Wigan to reduce the distance buses have to cover especially if sourcing buses is going to be hard. The shorter the distance the buses have to cover the better.

Just for any one travelling and it might well be known, that if the service is not resumed by the strike days potentially the only service will be the Clitheroe shuttle out of Bolton if it runs. The only issue being to get there will be difficult as Northern do not put replacement bus transport on (usually) during strike days, so this will leave Bolton and all the intermediate stations to Leyland (plus Westhoughton) disconnected on those strike days.

Might be better to use Euxton Balshaw Lane if you can get a lift then into Chorley. It's only five minutes by car. Northern should stop some of their diverted services via Wigan at EBA to serve the Chorley area, instead of expecting us to sit on bustitutions for 40-50 mins to PRE or BON. EBA has an hourly electric service from Liverpool to Preston via Wigan North Western.
