Hi everyone,

I wondered if anyone could shed some light on how the line clear verification process works on a axle counter railway please?

I got asked about it recently and it’s been bugging me ever since.
Thank you in advance

If you have access to Network Rail standards have a look at NR/L3/OPS/084.

Many moons ago when I was a signalling tech on the Yoker section, we were regularly called to faults with the axle counter section at Craigendoran. This area was prone to waves breaking over the sea wall so DC track circuits were useless. The fault that occurred was that the axles counting in were not counting out to the same value. When this happened, Craigendoran Junction would effectively 'lock up' and nothing could pass the protecting signals until the axle counters had been reset. There was an LCV procedure for this but I can't remember what it was!

LCV is part of the T3 procedure if the area has axle counters with EPRs with the vehicle management forms. Where the PICOP keeps the master record of every engineers train, machine or OTP that has entered and left the possession with all the signallers and ESs keeping their own local copy. If everything that was in put into a possession has been verified as having left the possession via the vehicle management forms them the LCV is complete and the signallers can restore their EPRs as per their SBIs.

Just to add to that, signallers only need to record engineering trains or On Track Machines that enter and exit a possession. On Track Plant (e.g. road railers), hand trolleys, skates in worksites etc.. are recorded by each individual COSS, ES and the PICOP on their vehicle management forms. Basically if it arrives or leaves the possession with a headcode then the signaller also needs to record it, otherwise they're not interested.
