Over the past few weekends, engineering works has been taking place around Chesterfield....what I am slightly bemused and puzzled with is that a 'limited service' is still being provided for passengers heading north from Chesterfield (Northern,EMR and XC at various times throughout the day using platform 3) via the Old Road but strangely a Southbound service is not and everything is using the UBH.....is there a reason for this and why cant trains stop heading south to provide a service either way???

Could this be due to capacity constraints? It's a 4 track railway but if you send everything through just one track at Chesterfield station, it may be difficult to fit everything in. Any southbound passenger train calling at Chesterfield would block all northbound trains for a few minutes.

As mentioned - pathing is too tricky because trains can only use platform 3.

Maybe it’s a platforming issue as they can only use platform 3 I believe?
Looking at RTT for this weekend for example, most if not all hours between roughly 20/25 past the hour to 10 to the hour, nothing passes Chesterfield....what I cant work out is why say 2 or 3 trains northbound stop , but none south...why not drop a northbound stopper to allow at least 1 southbound stopper to balance things up...its pointless providing a service to go north if you cant get back other than via rail replacement

I passed through Chesterfield on both days, going north on Saturday and returning on Sunday.

On Saturday afternoon about 1400, I saw no work of any description being carried out. On Sunday, the Up Main through the platform was being relayed.
Couldn't help wondering why Platforms 1 and 2 were not being used on Saturday when there was no work going on.

Could be the work happening around the Dore area

Probably the way the possession was laid out for protection limits. It would be a lot of trouble to split the possessions north and south of Chesterfield.

What I was wondering was; if trains had to go via Barrow Hill (due to work at Dore on Saturday) why not let them use Platforms 1 and 2 at Chesterfield and cross them over at Tapton Junction?
There was nothing at all going on South of Chesterfield on Saturday afternoon.

It’s possible that the up and down main through the station were within the possession limits. There wouldn’t necessarily be any visual clues at the station to indicate this.

Yeah, this is what the trains which are regularly booked to use barrow hill do - e.g. Weekdays 0752 EMR Sheffield - St Pancras crosses over and uses Platform 2 southbound.
Perhaps the possession could be adjusted to be just north of Tapton Junction?
