The lights on a class 66, or any other loco confuse me. At the bottom, where the main lights are, there are 2 on each side. One bigger one and one smaller one. When moving, usually, only one of the bigger lights are lit up. Does it matter which side of the train that light is lit up on?

Here is what I mean. One side is lit up and the other isn't.

Big ones are the headlights and only one is illuminated at a time. The right hand lamp is used during the daytime and the left hand lamp is used at night (it is angled to the cess to help illuminate the reflective signage). The small lights are marker lights. When the loco/unit is in depots and yards only the makers should be on and a headlight should be on when on a running line.

In your pic it looks like the driver has the lights in the day mode. At night the drivers side headlight would be lit and secondmans side marker would lit. I'm sure a driver will explain it better than I have.

EDIT... Yepp driver9000 beet me to it

In the daytime the headlight that is lit is the one on the secondman side. Nighttime its the drivers side.

The other two smaller sidelights are marker lights.
