Lighter Heist at BHX (Birmingham Airport)

Flying back up to Edinburgh on Monday Night I had 2 of the 3 lighters in my hand luggage confiscated at Security.

This is the first time for decades I have suffered such indignity. having traversed Airports all around the UK and Europe over the last few years. I always have at least 2 lighters in my bags.

Are there any regulations on this or did I come across a jobsworth ? The two I lost were "Poundland Specials" so no great hardship.

Does anyone know when the Smoking Area post security at BHX is coming back ?

When the refurbishment started years ago now they said it would return on completion of the upgrade.

But if one is in your jacket and a second in your bag on a separate tray no one’s going to notice, which is possibly what has happened to you before.

Normally I only use one tray and put my fags and lighter in my rucksack which always has at least one spare in a separate section.

Have been through countless Airports including BHX several times this year with no problem until the incident on Monday.

Who knows - operator in or just out of training - or just come from getting a bo*****king for letting something slip through, perhaps. Or maybe you resemble the “bloke from head office” they’ve been tipped off about!

Just to highlight what an anomaly this was -have flown EDI-LHR LHR-FCO (Rome)and FCO -LHR (at FCO) with three lighters in. hand baggage and sailed through security each time !!
