Highlands and Islands Transport Partnership (HITRANS) said:
Lifting The Spirit-Whisky By Rail Trial

HITRANS is pleased to invite rail freight operators to provide Expressions of Interest, including indicative costs, for the movement of bulk spirit by rail commencing in Spring 2013.

The freight is to be transported from Elgin Yard to some or all of the following terminals: Coatbridge, Elderslie, Grangemouth, Mossend
The freight is to be moved in containers with a maximum height of 2.67metres (tbc) with a maximum gross weight of 31 tons. An indicative load would be 16-20 containers per train. HITRANS will be contracting separately for the supply of 31-33000 litre tanks.

It is expected that the choice of wagon type will allow the gauge opportunity to be maximised.

Terminal operation plans and security arrangements (for Elgin) should be included in your response.

Road collection and delivery will be managed by distillers through their existing contractual relationships.

Funding is in place to operate in excess of 20 round trip services in Spring 2013 with no financial risk to the Train Operator. Cost quotes should assume that no grants are available. Responses should include details of train performance data and resilience plans.

Suppliers will be expected to assist in capturing data for environmental audit purposes.

Please respond by email to frank.roach@hitrans.org.uk by Wednesday 5th September. We will then commence a second stage of selecting parties to the Invitation to Tender process.

Very good - back in the day used to be in charge of the Chivas Regal flows of whisky barrels in special secure VDA wagons to Dalmuir , and also a flow of special demounted tank containers on FFA wagons. Flow ceased due to restructerin.g

Looks as if DRS will operate the service since they operate from mossend, coatbridge and grangemouth.

errrr no it doesn’t! It is an expression of interest document to ask FOCS to express their interest in the operating the service and to put themselves forward to be considered under a tender.

Now, it may be that DRS are the best place to win the work in the end but at this stage it doesn’t mean they WILL win the work.

Good to see a freight flow coming back to the railways.

I thought that on the Inverness-Aberdeen line and also on the Far North Line that there are (were) distilleries with sidings for Rail Freight to both receive materials and to dispatch their wonderful product!
