Lift only underground stations

With the increasing demands on space in central London, could future Crossrail/LU stations be built with a bank of high speed lifts instead of escalators? This would also allow for deeper stations to be built that would hopefully allow more capacity in areas already full of tunnels.

Even Liverpool James St has an emergency staircase. (I think.)

Many (most?) tube stations are no longer at the original surface locations for the very reason that lifts were too slow, inadequate capacity and impossible to vacate in an emergency. Years were spent replacing the lifts with escalators and moving the surface buildings to give space for the stairwells. Unlikely that anyone would want to reverse the trend

Recent lines on the Barcelona metro have had only lifts at some stations, although I think the larger ones still got escalators. I believe the reason is cost saving - these are the same lines that have tracks above each other on a single large tunnel which is big enough that stations don't need larger platform tunnels.
