It seems strange that there is no charge for using an elevator. When you are in a building it is costing the building owner electricity and would have thought it would be logical for them to try and recover this through an elevator charge. If you are disabled or for some reason need to use the elevator it should be free but if you just didn't want to walk up the stairs then why not charge to use the elevator?

God I've heard some rubbish before but this takes the Chocolate Digestive :roll:

I have seen a charge for a council-run beach lift before.

I always find the manufacturer "Schindler" amusing, as I always think to myself "Thank God for Schindlers Lift".

KONE for some reason makes me laugh!

I've just of thought of my favourite lift - it's in the Kalvertoren Shopping Centre in Amsterdam - it's got a slightly slanted structure, it's glass and seems to disappear into the roof!

We've never had to pay for them before and anyway lifts tend to be in public buildings, shops, stations or workplaces, places where the users will buy something, use a service or work. I would imagine if The Metrocentre started charging for the use of the lift a fortune would be lost by people boycotting the place. It would also be dangerous as people carrying shopping and heavy articles, in order to save money would use ramps or stairways.

I also find the notion offensive as I have a mild disability which makes using stairs very difficult if I dont have my hands free. I do not claim any benifits so I would be required to pay as I have no proof of my disability. Does your idea cater for examples on the Tyneside Metro, where the escaltors are switched off at quiet times forcing me to use the lift?

No, if you have any difficulty using the stairs then you should get an elevator pass. Charging for elevator use would at least stop some of the kids messing around in them going up and down at a shopping mall wasting electricity.

Its totally unnecssary to charge full stop. Security can prevent kids playing in them. How could I claim for an 'elevator pass' when I am not entitled to benifits, bus pass or parking? The whole idea is silly.

We're very sorry to inform you that due to rising costs, First Capital Connect must add 60p to the price of your ticket due to the electricity required to power the lighting. If you would like to open the windows, this leads to drag, so we must charge you a further fifty pence for adding the fuel bill to our train.
It doesn't bother us that people urinate on our services, throw rubbish, put gum on the seats, peel the stickers off the windows, abuse the ticket collectors, hold the doors, put their feet on the seats, leave papers on the table, spew all over your feet whilst in a drunken state and then stab you in the heart for complaining, but here at First Capital Disconnect, we've got to make ends meet.

Not easy with older elevators, until the 1990s the doors would close immediately when you pressed a floor button on most of them so wouldn't be easy to press all of them.

Not easy with older elevators, until the 1990s the doors would close immediately when you pressed a floor button on most of them so wouldn't be easy to press all of them.

It was a lot harder on the old ones, still worth a good try though!

Even though I'm about as strong a Tory as they come, I still couldn't prevent the mental image of climbing into an elevator, and hearing Cameron's voice, 'When this Government took office and inherited the mess from Labour, we had to make tough decisions. Maybe in your opinion but it's more believable than an Oxygen charge. If someone has said 30 years ago that it was a possiblity that cars could be tracked by sattelite and charged by the mile then I doubt many would believe them.

Well, i've never been in a lift in Reading, but if I ever do I hope it's an Otis............

PS On a more serious 'lift enthusiast' note, we used to have a mean one at work. It was a kind of rack and pinion affair attached to the side of one of our plant structures, climbing to around 230ft. The lift itself was just a rudimentary cage.
It was so rickety that some of the workers refused to use it, more than once it had overshot the top floor and continued to climb to the top of the rack until the cog left the rack (fortunately the pinion was at the top of the lift cage lol) and on the way down it didn't decelerate- it just hit the ground hard necessitating a paratrooper type pose to avoid jarred knees etc for the experienced rider!

It used to be called a skyrack, for those interested....
