My faveroute type of lift is Kone, especially the one at John Lewis in Southampton (Not the glass ones, the one right next to the stairway)

I hope you are not one of these people that say "Door closes when I push the button, I like that" if the door closed immediately after you press a floor button (something increasingly rare in British elevators), I think it was dieselducy that invented that phrase though.

I absolutely hate lifts and get really nervous and on edge when travelling in them.

whereas for me, i cant go more than two floors up except in a lift... im terrified of heights... i panic on escalators and stairs, and im not so fond of Glass lifts, but other lifts im fine with...

Someone I know used to be exactly to be the same, until they were trapped in a lift alone when it broke down, and for some reason the fear went disappeared!:-?

It was in a large high street store I believe, so it was dealt with swiftly and that may have led to the conquering of fear.

The only lifts I don't like are the ones at busy tube stations (such as the infamous Coven Garden), the jostling and crush is pretty bad. Plus the annoying people who sneak round the other side of the lift...

I am an escalator enthusiast. My favourite is the one in Marks and Spencer in Llanelli, it speeds up when you step on it!

Hilarious! Some of us used to have a bit of a giggle about scoring lifts in hotels - a blatant ****take but it kept us amused! One gent in particular had to scoop all the lifts in the building for both directions - talk about OCD! Much abuse was forthcoming on that front I can tell you.

The only lift I've been in that is particularly interesting is the Paternoster at Leicester University. That's very fun, especially going all the way around (not that you are supposed to, but everyone does at least once for the fun). The fact it's old and creaky makes it even better.

Excellent! On our forthcoming cruise holiday I must ensure I use all of the 17 lifts and get on and off at each deck. I will mark each deck and lift off as I do so.

What a pity the ship doesn't have any escalators.

Yes i believe everyone should try it at least once in their lifetime.

It's great fun teasing first-year undergraduates that they turn upside-down on the other side so if you miss the top floor you would be very quickly turned 180 degrees in total darkness. In actual fact if you observe carefully you will notice that the numbers and notices on each compartment, in pretty obvious places too, never turns but it is amazing how many people believe it when you tell them for the first time. Do it every year and never gets boring.

However you soon get bored after a while as they're way too slow. You can travel on the adjacent lift from 2nd floor to the 18th then back to 2nd before that flaming thing has even reached halfway up.

If you enjoy spending your Sunday nights burning your tyres out, and then forking over £200 to have them replaced...these are roundabout enthusiasts!

My favourite lift is the glass ones that go up the side of the CN Tower in Toronto. Bloody quick and amazing views. Not one for people scared of heights though !!

But the best make of elevator surely has to be schindler from Germany
Theirs are so good they even made a film about them......Schindlers Lift.

Just when you think you've seen weird hobbys people like or do, another one comes along!

I really, really can't see the point in liking lifts? What does it involve? Getting the lift numbers? Getting certain lifts before there withdrawn?

For any one whos interested in lifts and escalators at Greenford they still have wooden escalators!

But as the old saying goes what ever floats your boat.

I quite like the lifts to the Jubilee at Stratford, but conversely can become slightly disorientated in high-speed lifts (which meant I always used the stairs at college... 112 just to get to the 5th floor! - this was even worse the time I was told to go to the 7th, the top floor, only to be told once there I actually wanted the 2nd!).

Warrior Square swimming pool back home (which is now closed) used to have some tiny lifts which could only fit two people at a time and were completely open! They looked like plastic crates...

I have had one dodgy experience with lifts, when visiting my sister a couple of years ago. She lived on the 9th floor of a tower block at the time, so I used the lift. Down it came - and on the floor was a sleeping drunk.

As my username would suggest I get around a bit, and i'm registered blind. My favourite type of lift is one with good tactile buttons and an accurate, descriptive and hopefully not too depressing voice announcer. All the above make my life sooo much easier

From a more anarackie point of view, i have in the past done voiceover work including lifts, particularly the bespoke ones for department stores or other venues which want that bit more than going up, doors closing!

At the scottish parliament, the lifts are voiced by Sir shaun connery.

If you have a week stomach dont use the ones in jurys inn birmingham. Good ride if ya like that sorta thing though

It seems strange that there is no charge for using an elevator. When you are in a building it is costing the building owner electricity and would have thought it would be logical for them to try and recover this through an elevator charge. If you are disabled or for some reason need to use the elevator it should be free but if you just didn't want to walk up the stairs then why not charge to use the elevator?

How do you discriminate between people who need to use it and people who choose not to use the stairs?

I don't think even the smartest lift could determine who was lazy and who had a load of shopping.

I always find the manufacturer "Schindler" amusing, as I always think to myself "Thank God for Schindlers Lift".

Well if you were disabled or had a need to use the elevator then you'd be issued with an elevator pass.

I think it'd only be feasible in private, non-residential buildings without a huge number of floors.
