Levisham Lamp Room is a winner for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway
Announced at a ceremony in London for the 2014 National Railway Heritage Awards, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway has received The NRHA Supporters Award supported by J&J Longbottom. The rebuild the timber slate roofed lamp room at Levisham Station won the competition for the best small project.
The build replicates an original North Eastern Railway lamp room, which burnt down in the mid 1960s. Levisham Station Master and head of Levisham Station Group Volunteers Simon Barraclough, comments that Unfortunately there were no blue prints to work from so to recreate the lamp room, original photographs were sourced, studied, measured/compared and, using similar material sizes on extant buildings, at Levisham, We also consulted people who could remember the original Lamp Room, which helped us to produce a set of drawings to work to.
The Lamp Room was built during the annual Levisham Station work week on Saturday 2nd March and finished externally Sunday 9th March 2013. It took 5 days to erect the lamp room shell, around 500 hours being expended from the start of ordering the materials through to completion which included materials being preservative treated, pre-painted and final construction.
