Hello

I'm looking at going from Levenshulme to Clitheroe on Saturday, but ideally going out via Preston where I'll stop for an hour or so

I can see there are three off peak returns:

via Darwen £13.70
any permitted £14.00
via Preston £19.00

How can I see which are the permitted routes on the any permitted fare? I assume Preston isn't one of them, but then I can get trainsplit to offer me the £14 fare via Preston (albeit using a Rail Replacement bus), do you think I could use this on the direct train between Manchester and Preston?

Believe the "Any Permitted" routes are 'via Darwen' and 'via Todmorden'. (Perhaps someone can confirm). As the 'via Preston' fare is higher priced, don't believe that the "Any Permitted" fare is valid that way, without an appropriate (one way) change of route excess, unless, of course, you can get a suitable itinerary issued when you book your tickets.

The Any Permitted fare appears only to permit travel via Darwen. I can't see that the "via Darwen" fare therefore really imposes any restrictions on the route you can take.

The "via Preston" fare adds validity via Preston (which is not otherwise a permitted route, rather confusingly!). You're only getting an itinerary for the £14 "Any Permitted" fare via Preston because it involves a replacement bus, and replacement buses don't have mileages as far as journey planners are concerned - so it's deemed to be within 3 miles of the shortest route (which is via Darwen).

You can of course follow that itinerary and travel via Preston, but only if you take the exact trains/buses it's offered on. Otherwise you would be liable to be charged the excess to the "via Preston" fare.

It should also permit travel via Todmorden - from memory, the "Via Darwen" fare (or "Via Bromley Cross" for Blackburn!) was introduced when the Tod Curve opened - the likes of Rishton have a "Via Todmorden " fare too.
(And the price differential is in pence - but that's a moan for another time.).

It logically should - but I can't see that it actually is a permitted route! That being said I can't see an Any Permitted ticket being challenged if used via Todmorden.
