Level Crossings

Hi all,

IIRC the minimum time between closure of gates and arrival of a train on a lot of level crossings in the UK is a minimum of 30 seconds.

Certainly seems that this isn't always the case abroad: in this clip the time between the two events is hardly any.

For clarity, for AHBs, the minimum time between amber showing and a train arriving is 27 seconds.

It's also worth noting that overall level crossing safety in Britain is better than almost everywhere else.

It isn't.

At a typical AHBC in the U.K., the barriers don't even start to descend until a train approaching at the maximum permissible speed is 27 seconds' running time from the crossing and after the road traffic lights have been showing for a few seconds.

For an automatic crossing I think it's 27 seconds (at line speed) between striking in (which will start the lights and sirens) and the train arriving. I reckon the siren starts at 7 seconds and the train reaches the crossing at 40 seconds, making it 33 seconds- but no idea if train is at line speed (seems to be accelerating?)
