It seems that we are not the only country to have problems with road users ignoring warning lights at level crossings.

I will try to find the link where a cyclist, of all people gets hit by a train, here is one from the Czech Republic, where a trucker drives in frount of a train

the incident takes place towards the end of the video clip. One truck negotiates the crossing safely, a car and bus pass on an adjasent road, then the truck appears from the right. The tractor unit was unscathed, but the train demolished the trailer. Made me laugh

Fortunately the train suffered little damage, but one of the CD Pendolinos was out of action for some time after a similar incident this summer.

Australia is not without its issues at level crossings. I live near one in suburban Perth and whilst train/car interactions are seemingly rare, there are plenty of people who choose to ignore not just the traffic lights that protect the adjacent intersection but also the red flashing lights of the crossing itself.
