Level crossing winge!

A minor complaint, but at lunchtime today driving I was stopped at the Strawberry Hill level crossing; after waiting for about 10 minutes I gave up, along with several others, and diverted to a different route.
Checking on RTT there had been a train just before I arrived, the next being due 20 minutes later as the loop service was a rail replacement bus.
Is there a system to clear the signal if there is not in fact a train due? - There usually is quite a long hold at this crossing, but not for 20 minutes! (The RRB would have been stopped at the same crossing).

More likely to be the signalman who 'forgot'.

Maybe... And yes I've done that for my sins. However it may have been held down due to a fault; something which also can happen often, especially when the local authority has gritted through the crossing.

Shouldn't gritters be OK as the road through the crossing needs doing or is it done as part of RHTT?

Assuming this is Strawberry Hill in SW London, then Strawberry Hill crossing is MCB CCTV which normally have auto raise, I’m betting on crossing failure or track circuit failure through the crossing, rather than them accidentally being left down.

The grit can affect track circuits and repeated instances of road gritting over a crossing can cause the bottom of the rail to become corroded.

Actually it is the salt in the road treatment that causes the problem.

Sounds a little annoying, Almost as annoying as crossings that go down as a train approaches a station (from the other side) and then raises when the train stops in the station without going past. A safety measure and we should be glad of them. Better to be stuck down than stuck up.
