He was only caught in August when Dorset police charged him with assault and his DNA matched that of blood found on the smashed windscreen of the Mercedes

Speed figures on the right hit 97 mph at one point, and if that 170 had hit the car, Ufton Nervet all over again.

I was watching Traffic Cops a few weeks ago, and a man (he wasn't in a car) decided to run over the level crossing. The train came along and his foot got stuck on the track. Thankfully, he managed to pull away, but his shoe was run clean over. Very close, and very lucky.

Talking of traffic cops on TV, I saw one quite a while back where they were chasing a car and it went straight through a level crossing and on to a railway line, and the drivers car was on tracks, he also had knocked himself out and the officers had to go onto the track and get him out whilst a train was coming:

Personally I think they should of transferred the persuit to an Air Support unit (If available). As you can see in the video the police on his back causes more 'pressure' to get away, and if there would of been a collision between the unit and the car trying to get away the police would of got the blame for putting 'pressure' on whoever was driving.

There aren't very many police choppers. Very good chance both the East Midlands and Cambridgeshire ones (based approx equidistant from Peterborough) were busy already

They seem to punish you heavily if you get caught without insurance. The only problem is, a majority of the people they catch are the sort who couldn't care less, and are back doing 120-mph in 50-mph zones within days.

Back on the original topic though, apparently a certain Mr Clarke reckons that long sentences might be a waste of money and harden the offenders up more. He has a point, but I don't agree 100%.

But on the TV show we don't see the trial, there backgrounds, and other details about them. The court will.

I'm not sure what action the courts will take, but there's no point finding someone who can't pay. Hence my post about needing to know background details.

Somewhere I used to work had an AHB.

One fine day the failure alarm went off, followed by a driver reporting a "near miss" with a car on said AHB. Signal department were not far away, so went round there and found one of the barriers lying forlornly on the road - so sign of any car or witnesses so we had to carry on working under failure conditions until repairs were effected.

Some weeks later, a colleague who was temporarily working in the Area Managers office was dealing with the morning's post when he came across a letter from a person claiming damages from British Rail due to their "car being struck by a level crossing barrier" supplying location and date :roll:

Rightly so! I'm sick of drivers blaming the railways for their idiocy.

Suppose it doesn't help when Phillip Hammond comes out and says that Cars should have priority over Trains, though.

I cringe at what might have been if the train hit him, it would certainly derail, the barrier could have caused if they were struck head on, it does not bear to think about it, the consequences may have been tragic.

That was me. In the incident I mentioned, he only lost his shoe, not his leg.

I know his leg was not taking off, I was pointing to the fact his shoe on his trailing leg was took clean off, maybe he should have lost a leg, as harsh as it sounds, would learn them a lesson
