Another suspension between Lewes and Eastbourne due to the barriers struck in the Berwick area.

Lots of lost souls at Eastbourne trying to cram onto the 12,12X and 12A’s at the bus stop opposite the station.

“A road vehicle colliding with the barriers at a level crossing between Lewes and Eastbourne means that all lines are blocked. Trains running between these stations may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised.”

One bonus I guess is that Brighton commuters get a direct Clapham J service with some of the diverted trains!

These ones at Berwick seem to be getting regularly struck.

Are these protected by cameras as well does anyone know?

Goodness me that is appalling.

Luckily it looks like it was the stopping Brighton service going through just after rather than the fast trains.

Assuming the train would come off far better, it's almost a shame it didn't crash into the car - that would save the police a search.

I worked there many years ago on the station and the road from the south is a bit of a blind corner by the pub, I wonder he if came racing up from the A27 and suddenly saw a closed barrier in front of him ?

I believe it's a obstacle detection crossing so not sure if there is CCTV. Three Bridges ROC would be the supervising box as it controls signalling in the area. Would this have triggered an alarm and automatically reset the signals back to danger (as the crossing detection equipment would "see" an obstruction)

Edit. I see from RTT the train was a stopper and terminated at Berwick.

Hilarious that the other cars' occupants just sat there - someone else will deal with it, and it's raining...! Presumably a stolen blue car (sold as seen, with red and white residue on front bumper...)

What did you want them to do? Run onto the crossing when a train was coming to retrieve the barrier?

Sussex Police say that they were chasing a car at around 11.30am when the car struck the level crossing barrier at Berwick.

The car made off without stopping and evaded police. Officers are still searching for it.

The road is likely to be closed for several hours.
I wonder if the door bell captured the police cars going past. Sham either cuts out just as the train is about to go past
Makes you wonder
Do you knows doorbell who took the video?

May have been past the protecting signal, so would need a REC call to stop the train

If you look at the black car that overtakes the waiting cars, you can see blue lights, so it must be an unmarked police car.

Had I been there, I would at the very least have got out to see what had happened and if there was anything I could do (safely), even if only out of curiosity.

Can you not see what happened through the windscreen then? Risking getting hit by debris should a train being coming through at speed probably isn't a good idea either.

I wasn't sure about that - they could well be, but there does seem to be some background noise that sounds like engines idling.
You're right. Just noticed how narrow that is to park on :D

I used to be a regular in the area and cars did/could not park there. If you turn left before, and just after the crossing, there is a car park; also behind the pub on the right (which always used to do a good Sunday Roast....)

Shame the signal box (behind the pub) hasn't been manned for the last 9 years....

Never went in the pub, but used to drive that way to/from School sometimes (if giving friends a lift) and agree about the parking.

It wouldn't have made any difference in this instance, and over the last 9 years would it have given any benefits to passengers over being signalled from the ROC on TCB?

Even if it was a CCTV monitored crossing, it's not routine to record the video. Plus, unless it's a relatedly new system or it's been upgraded, the system is monochrome (not colour).

The fracture sensor in the barrier boom (should have) detected the damage. It should have caused an alarm to sound in the monitoring signal box / signalling centre.

I'm fairly sure Berwick is Obstacle Detection controlled by Three Bridges ROC.

I suspect that any passengers waiting on the platform showered with wreckage probably wouldnt agree with you.

It can't be legal to park so close to a level crossing that a car waiting to cross can't stay on its side of the road (the unmarked police car)
