When this level crossing closes, a worker in high vis comes out of a hut and stands on the road in the middle of the crossing. What’s their role?

They can allow pedestrians to cross even if the barriers are down. They also monitor the crossing as it is so wide people could get trapped inside.

A large custom fibre optic display in the middle of the crossing helps the attendant determine which lines and directions are active.
