I have been aware for some time that there are several rumours flying around the internet concerning the appearance of a class 50 or two at the Dartmoor Railway at Okehampton.

One such rumour which appeared to be so strongly believed it made it into the "rumours box" of a popular railway magazine, stated that one of the class 50s would 'not have far to travel' to reach Okehampton - the inference being that Royal Oak from the Plym Valley would be making the short(ish) trip.

Before this rumour gains any more momentum, I would just like to post a quick statement from the owner, Mr Dave Cunningham:

"There are no plans at the present time to move Royal Oak from its base at the Plym Valley Railway. The restoration of the loco will be completed at the Plym Valley Railway, but from September 24th the loco will almost certainly be moved out from the shed. Having been in the shed for almost a year, the PVR board feels that it is time to allow other projects to use the shed. At this time a temporary tent accommodation for the loco may be built to help protect the loco against the weather."

The phrase "desperate times, desperate measures" springs to mind... ;)

--- slightly older post above --- --- newest post below ---

I'm pleased to report that following another visit to the Plym Valley Railway "Royal Oak" has now had the entirety of the roof painted in black gloss top coat, as well as the buffers, and buffer beams.

Also, the body work repairs on the cab side at number 2 end, A side, are also complete.

So whats next? Yellow warning panels? Then what, does the whole side get a coat of white as a base colour then add red, grey and blue, and will it be brush or spray painted?

Well, the most important thing at the moment is still to complete work on the cab sides. With only one finished, and less than a month until the loco is due to leave the shed, things are getting a bit close...

Unfortunately, only one of our group is qualified to do the metal working required, and so work can only be done on the cab sides when he is around.

We're not quite at the yellow warning panels stage yet, but the loco will be painted into a grey undercoat and then the other colours will be applied. I would imagine that we'll start with the yellow warning panels. When we are at this stage, all the paint will be applied with brushes.

On the subject of bodywork, today 50021 Rodney enjoyed her first bodywork repairs in quite a while. The Driver's cabside of No.1 end had a rotten section cut out, new plate welded in, filled, sanded & undercoated.

Why the secrecy, i know its a nosey question but are the finances in place to get Rodney going again, i would've thought getting it in the public eye would attract donations and help in getting it going?

I'm not privvy to the group's finances, so I can't comment on that, but I quite agree with your comments about publicity. I don't know why the group doesn't want it publicised. I've suggested to them several times about making a website or something but they always refuse & I don't really know why.

I presume they are either keeping the name of a supporter secret or they don't want any outside interference?

What's the current state of health with 50031 & in the future will it join 50044 & 50049 on the mainline?

Currently a runner although the bodywork is more than a little 'tired'. It will certainly not be joining 44 or 49 in the near future since it requires the fitting of complex items such as OTMR. However one should never say never.

Out of 50008, 50017 & 50026, which has the best chance of going mainline in 2012?

As I understand it, being one of those working on it, 008 will still be under repair/recommissioning in 2012, as no.4 traction motor has a power-earth fault & will need a repair at least, or even possibly need rewiring, and the AWS & vac brake equipment is still being refitted, which will entail some serious fabricating of new pipework to replace that removed when it was being prepared for the abortive export to Peru.

I am lead to believe 26 will be undertaking some main-line test runs with a view to running a main-line tour in mid-2012.

Do we know why it's at Eastleigh Works?

As far as I'm aware, that's actually where it lives!

--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

A quick addition in the run-up to a more in depth "Royal Oak" status update!

50017 "Royal Oak" will be making a temporary appearance outside of the shed tomorrow, September 24th, for the refitting of roof hatches, grills and louvres. This also coincides with the Plym Valley Railway's 'Transport Weekend'. If you're in the area, please come along and say hello!
