I have read most of this thread, and feel that I have a fairly good idea what is going on - including a fair amount of "bashing" of the non-train related sort!

(Certain individuals deserve being ranted at though - no point putting stupid and provocative comments up and then not expecting a response!)

I personally would like to add to the core of this thread by putting forwards a few words regarding 50017 Royal Oak, at the Plym Valley Railway. The loco's restoration is progressing well - All external needle gunning has been finished, cab-sides are in the process of being restored and two thirds of A-side is 'under primer'. Internal jobs are progressing slowly - for example cleaning out all the rock-solid muck that has accumulated under the walkways is a b*tch of a task! (No tool seems to fit under the traction motor cable holders!)

The cabs themselves are in relatively good condition and are currently being used as store rooms - hopefully it won't take too much to sort the cabs out!

I believe that the provisional plan is to have the loco running ex-works by the summer, so you'll all have to come and see the finished result - a NSE 50 hauling a rake (of 3) Mk2 coaches, (albeit in chocolate and cream livery!)

Don't forget to check out the website, www.50017.co.uk for updates on the latest work, and if you're in the Plymouth area and fancy coming along and helping out (there's plenty to do!) there are contact details on the website as well!

Hi 50fan91, i took a container down to Imerys at Plympton on Wednesday morning and after i loaded it (well watched someone else load it) i abandoned the truck outside the approach road to the railway and went to have a nose round, specifically to see 50017! I found a gentleman who's name i never got and he kindly took me round the shed and showed me the work you guys were doing, i have to say that i was impressed at what you guys have done, its not till i actually stood next to the thing that i realised what a big job it is, i noticed that i lot of the work seems to be the same as whats happening to D400 at Yeovil, cab panel replacement etc.
Anyway, i left a cash donation towards Royal Oak with the gent who showed me round, i hope it found its way to one of you as he said you'd be working on the loco that evening, Wednesday nights and some weekends he said you guys work on it?

As i said to the gent who showed me round, i look forward to seeing it finished!

Nice one Mr Jammer. If you ever get up to Rowsley (Peak Rail) on a Sunday, we could show you round Repulse.

Ah-ha! So you're the mystery person that was kind enough to make a donation! May I say on behalf of all of us how grateful we are to you! As you say, it really is a big job - although 17 is mechanically sound, (or at least it was when it was propelled into the workshop!), the extent of bodywork damage (corrosion) is quite bad. As you have observed for yourself, it is predominantly the cab sides that are the worst affected along with areas surrounding the grills, route indicator box, headlight, etc.

Although it is not fair to blame everything on the last owner, it is a sad fact that most of this is due to the loco having been sat outside in all weathers at its previous home, (next to "Rodney" - the loco that was one of the main reasons you started this post incidentally!)

You are probably aware that 50s suffered their worst cab side corrosion due to the lack of a window sealant, meaning that water was able to cascade down the inside of the metal, pool and eventually corrode right the way through. This has been affecting Royal Oak since at least its mainline service years around a decade ago, (VSOE), and we are of the understanding that no work of this scale has been undertaken on the loco since approximately 1988.

So yes, there is a lot to do!

Now, you say you came down last Wednesday? I was there all day on Wednesday, as a Plymouth university student my times that I can work on the loco are a bit more flexible than some other members - when you passed the A-side grills you should have noticed a person working industriously to clear out the muck from under the cable trunking - that was me! (Although it is possible that you looked round when I had slipped off for a surreptitious sandwich, depending on the exact time you were there!) If I wasn't there, you may have noticed a hoover, strip light and assorted pointed tools that were all I had left to mark my particular territory!

We work on 17 on Wednesdays, Thursdays and some weekends. There is a lot to do, but I think that all of us have got a mental picture of the loco running on the PVR in glorious original NSE colours, and that is what keeps us going. Donations such as yours are also very much appreciated and spur us on considerably!

If you happen to be in the area again and pop in to the railway, come and say hello! Ask for James and there is a possibility I might be around - especially on a Wednesday or Thursday!

Thanks again! :D

Thanks very much, I am following your work on 29/30 with interest and although I have never visited Peak Rail I would very much like to before too long! Keep up the good work! :D

Thanks matey. If you want to let me know approximately when you might be free to visit us at Peak Rail, I can tell you what days we will be there. Incidentally, I live in Tyseley, ten minutes walk from Rodney & I'm often there at weekends when I'm not at PR, or down at Yeovil working on 50050.

Hey no problem James, i know every little bit helps, yes i was there Wednesday (30th) must have been between 11-11:30am, i never seen anyone working on Royal Oak while i was there, gotta admit i don't know my A sides from my B sides, i walked down the side that is in that horrible green prima on what seemed to be the main walk way through the shed, only person i seen doing any work was a chap with a grinder doing something with some what looked like railings, i never looked at the other side of the loco, i was'nt sure if it was off bounds and to be honest i was gratefull to the chap for letting me inside the shed at all, i spent most of my time stood at the front of the loco by the steam loco chatting with the bloke, you may have seen me, everyone was wearing orange hi-vis but i was wearing yellow hi-vis coat?
However ive just looked at the pic i took on my phone and there is indeed a hose of some sort hanging out one of the holes where the bodyside grills are situated and a red hoover on the floor, so i guess thats your tools?
Im affraid the nature of work means i don't know where im going from one day to the next, so i could be back down Plymouth next week, next month or next year but by all means i will pop in if im down that way again!

Thanks for the offer Andy, i do appreciate it, as i said to James i never know where im going be from one day to the next and if i was up round Peak Rail it would probably be during the week with the truck, i don't really got out and about much during the weekends as its my only time at home to be with the girlfriend/family etc, im affraid 'going anywhere' at the weekend usually involves driving and when you do as many miles as i do each week its preferably to stay at home if you get what i mean, hence why i've still not got down to Yeovil to see 50050 :(

I doubt very much I'll be able to come and visit any time soon, but I very much appreciate your offer and would love to be able to take you up on it at some point in the future!

Likewise if you're ever in the Plymouth area, let me know! :D

Talking 50's eh? Back in the early 1990's when i was an active member at Bodmin and helped (briefly) on 50042 there (before she was a 'runner') we went to Laira and stripped 50010 of parts (obviously the Diesel Group had agreed the price beforehand with the Depot), still got a sign adorning my shed door saying 'Keep this door shut' and a 'Danger overhead live wire' one too. Then the family came along, and just didn't have the time anymore ...

You want to keep hold of that - originals are very collectable! We're attempting to source those for Royal Oak and replicas are £21 each! So that's almost £200 once you've factored in all the additional costs just for eight small pieces of metal!

Im curious, does it really matter who this fella is?

Anyway, question, does anyone know if 50026 will definetly be at the Swanage Diesel Gala this weekend?

Just to clear up one point, the Swanage Gala is actually next weekend! (May 6th - 8th.) As far as I am aware, 50026 should be in attendance. I have yet to hear anything to the contrary, but as with any of these events anything could happen in the coming week!

*As a quick addition, several message boards at various places on the internet do appear to be speculating what will "replace" 50026 this year 'at the last minute', but none of the posts appear very serious. I think most people are just remembering the situation last year and their confidence in the loco has not improved!

Yeah thats what i meant 50Fan, was getting ahead of myself, Truck show this weekend, Diesel gala next weekend.

I hope 50026 is ready, i'll be somewhat disapointed if 20059 replaces it!

I think it's a pretty foregone conclusion that 50026 will now not be at Swanage. When I wrote my original post I had no reason to suppose that there was a problem, but I have just started discovering posts on the internet saying that 20059 has indeed replaced Indomitable. :(

This must be a very recent development - one of the websites I looked at only posted the news at 11:00 this morning?

The website in question states:

"50026 has been withdrawn from the line up due to low power issues."

Not to me, but the person it apparently did matter to never emailed me when I invited him to with the name, so I don't know if he's referring to the same person.

I'd also heard 50026 was not attending Swannage for the same reasons as stated on here.

The owner confirmed it a week or so ago.

Well, if it was confirmed that long ago it's a shame that the Swanage Railway doesn't appear to have made any mention on its website, other than a very generic statement regarding how locos to be in attendance are still being finalised!

:(

It was mentioned on the Swanage site along with the withdrawal of the 4-vep before it was changed to the generic statement on the site now.

Well, the ones we're going to do for 50017 will probably be graphic stickers adhered to small aluminium plates. By the time we're finished, whatever we will have done will be indistinguishable from the original warning plates the loco carried.

How is the bodywork going on 50017, theres not been anything about D400 on there sight for a while, im assuming its still outside waiting for the second side to be done?

Royal Oak's bodywork is coming along nicely, with multiple layers of primer on the main body sides, as well as filler which is in the process of being sanded down..

The cab sides still need some considerable attention and are not progressing very quickly. Number 1 end front panel is receiving attention as well, the first layer of primer having been applied last week.

A provisional date has been set for the loco coming out of the shed, but it should be noted that the loco will not be finished at this stage, merely 'patched up' so that the work can be completed outside in the open. (Hopefully the summer is kind to us.. :|)

Thanks for your continued interest - both myself and the loco's owner are very aware that 50017's website is not very up to date. The gentleman in charge of the website has many commitments, and it seems that we aren't all that high up the list.. :(

As such, hopefully with this post there are a couple of very recent pictures (Wednesday, May 25th) for you to enjoy!

--

With regards to D400, I pass the YRC on the train every time I travel Salisbury/Plymouth (or vice versa) and I have been pleased to observe the progress that is being made to the loco. Hope all is well, Fearless crew! :D
