Hi Andy, i read somewhere that D400 is off to the Midland Railway Centre? If its true when is it going.... and will the bodywork repairs include a repaint? I got visions of D400 double heading a train or two with a certain green loco that is resident at the railway. :)

That's the plan yeah, it passed its UAT a couple weeks ago, so as soon as the owner can arrange a loco to haul it, its off to the MRC for bodywork repairs, the spare rad fan to be fitted, the motor blower fault to be investigated further and hopefully a repaint as D400. I dont think there are any plans at the moment to run it at the MRC, but if its possible that would be good running with Sir Edward.

Surely this is a bit harsh on the Yeovil Railway Centre.
Obviously work of this nature is not for operating on Yeovils demonstration track. For the last couple of years, we have been exploring options to get 50050s corroded cabsides and roof repaired. It has proved all but impossible to get anybody prepared to travel to Yeovil. So we have concluded that its probably better to take the loco to somewhere more central where welders / fabricators are actually known to exist! 50050 has now spent over 2000 days outside next to the engine shed. With little or no prospect of actually being inside, we are not prepared to watch it deteriorate further. The pioneer class 50 deserves better.

plus the email I was passed on by someone who got alot of abuse for voicing the same opion as me.
which I may post on here because it wasn't called for that amount of abuse to be levelled at someone and people need to hear the truth.

The welding itself will probably take a few weekends to sort. There's the usual EE cabside rot cuz the window seals were never that good to start with & the drainage gutters inside easily become blocked with debris and hold the water in. There's some areas of rot on the roof, mainly over the engine and the opening roof hatches, but they have purchased new hatches which should be fitted whilst at the MRC. Some areas of the cantrail guttering also need cutting out & replacing.

Apart from what I mentioned in my previous message, the rad fan blew a brush box earlier in the year so the fan needs to come out to have this investigated for any damage to the fan motor. There's an air leak somewhere which needs tracking down & the some of the brake cylinders may need replacing as the seals have gone after years of not doing anything. I would guess most of next year will be taken up with all this. As for costs, I have no idea!

as richard and andy mention, Fearless deserve better. At the end of the day it appears to me as an outsider that for what ever reason they do not want the loco there and are trying to make things as hard as possible.

This months Rail has a good article on Fearless

Thanks Floydee, I think I know who you are! Traction has a good plug for the book too this month.

Damn bad form there Templecombe. Posting a private email between third
parties not on this forum is a gross invasion of privacy and probably
illegal.

Some questions for you then Templecombe; How can posting two replies, without posting the question, give a balanced view? What is the context of the replies? Impossible to judge without the question. Where is "a lot of abuse"? How do we know there was not a lot of abuse in the questions? Who are you to make a judgement on what is abuse or not?

Indeed, Who are you? Hiding behind an annonymus front defaming people. Hardly condusive to you being taken seriously.

Why is it "very harsh" on the Yeovil lads? Are you party to the agreement between the two organisations? If so whats your handle on the situation. Please provide documented proof in your reply.

Why was an email "passed on to" you? What interest in this do you have? Indeed, earlier in this thread you say you have no interest in 50050. Yet later, you have enough interest to steal somebody's intelectual property and post it on a forum.

Everyone, firstly it's a shame that this slanging match has being started in a public domain i wouldn't normally post but i feel a bit of injustice could be going on, secondly on this forum where it looks as if people don't have to identify there real name and so therefore don't worry about the implications of there statements 'Templecombe' etc alot of bull could be posted.

Everything i'm saying here as myself and not representing YRC, but for your information YRC have good communication with the locomotives owner currently, there's much more i could say i do have access to all the facts but frankly all details surrounding a privately owned loco, stored on a private site are exactly that, private, if you really do wish to show your support for 50050 please buy their book, donate and go and volunteer for them, same for the railway centre.I prefer to hold my discussions in real time face to face with the appropriate people with all the facts not on an internet forum in front of an audience.

It's a shame people who are involved in preservation etc do feel the need to discuss private matters on forums and such, like this as it does tend to cause tension but that's their own choice, whether the owner approves in this case im not so sure.

Lets keep it fair lads, im sure we could all write plenty of stories people would like to hear about what goes on in any group of people, but lets save it for the autiobiography sales eh?

Thanks for your support of mine & Richard's annoyance at anonymous tittle tattle Matt. If you look further up this thread, you'll see I did not start this argument, I began by answering genuine questions from a few people interested in the health and condition of Fearless, but I did comment on what I consider very bad manners posting private emails on here, which may amount to a breach of the data protection act. I have been helping Richard work on Fearless this year, and if you were at the 150 event, we may have spoken. I may comment further after I have consulted with Richard, who does not contribute to this forum.

Cheers Mr Bulwark :) Richard told me who you are, it was good to meet you at the 150 event, and I thank you for your support.

Hey Andy, any news on when D400 is on the move, been keeping an eye on the web-site but not seen anything?

Hi, Fearless has at lonnnnng last been put in the shed at Yeovil until the end of March, so we are intending to start bodywork repairs very soon and replace the corroded engine room roof hatches. Assuming she will be turfed out of the shed at the end of March, that's when we will be moving her.

Nice one Andy. Whilst its internals are in a good condition, the outside is more than a bit tired and needs some TLC:

http://englishelectric.zenfolio.com/p703233358/e21f6e0ca

I'm glad its been under cover during these past few months considering the weather we've had.

Richard, Ashley & I spent last weekend working on her in the shed. We re-torqued the internal axle bolts after the UAT & replaced the outer cover gaskets, removed the two smaller roof hatches which are somewhat corroded & they will be replaced with the new ones Rich has had made (the four larger ones over the power unit will be done at a later date, though the new hatches have already been made for these too), removed corrosion from around the hatch openings and a start was made on bodywork repairs at no2 end. We are all glad its been under cover too!!

We are still hopeful a welder can be found while we are still in the shed, otherwise we'll have to look for one once we get to the MRC. We're going to refill 33 with water, fire her up & carry on with the testing we began last year.

Check out the D400 website for pics of bodywork repairs in progress at Yeovil since Christmas, and an appeal for any spare ££££'s you might want to donate :) Oh and by the way Mr Templecombe, I now know who you are.

Hi Andy, good to see D400 is coming along well (Hows 50029/030 & 033?).
Now a welder is working on D400 at Yeovil does that mean the move to the MRC is off, or will it still make the move?

Hi Mr Jammer. Work has started on reviewing the extent of the damage to the wiring in 29 & we are finding what appears to be deliberate cutting of cables inside trunking where the lids had been replaced to hide what had been done. 30 is continuing to progress well, the engine rebuild is about 2/3 done. All the pistons, liners & heads are back on & work is currently on the fuel pumps, injectors, valve gear & camshafts. Electrically, the control cubicle is now 3/4 complete & I currently have the wheelslip relays in pieces in my house. Both cabs are being refurbished.

We havent done anything to 33 yet this year, as the guy with the keys is busy at work, but we hope to start continuing the testing soon that we began last year & we should start doing bodywork repairs on 21 as well this year.

As far as I am aware, having not been down to Yeovil myself yet this year, the plan is to get as much of the bodywork done as the group's money will allow while at Yeovil & move to the MRC sometime this year for the rad fan & motor blower repairs.
