I would like to to take my dad to the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester this Saturday for the day. Departing Leicester around 9am and returning around 4pm.

I'm happy to travel either the nearest station at Deansgate or to Oxford Road stations and get the Metroshuttle bus.

We have a Red Spotted Hankey £10 voucher each, which I'd like to use.

I hold a Disabled railcard and my dad uses his small lightweight mobility scooter (he's got his EMT mobility scooter pass & CPT pass).

I've looked on BRfares http://www.brfares.com/#fares?orig=LEI&dest=0438&rlc=DIS&expert=on and see the return is £29.30 but can anyone recommend anything cheaper or suggest a split?

Thank you for any help.

A Leicester - Blythe Bridge Off Peak Day Return is £9.25 with the railcard
A Blythe Bridge - Manchester Stations Off Peak Day Return is £8.80 with the railcard

Totaling £18.05

This requires travelling Leicester-Derby, Derby-Stoke, Stoke-Manchester. All Derby to Stoke trains stop at Blythe Bridge. It's not the fastest route and the trains are smaller/less comfortable. Journeys are between 2h24 and 2h48 (each way), which is around 30-50 minutes slower than the fastest route via Sheffield. The route via Sheffield has one change fewer, which may be an issue if mobility is limited.

If travel via Sheffield is required, splitting at Nottingham will bring the total down to £21.

This will also allow travel via Derby without going through Nottingham as both tickets are valid for starting/stopping short at Derby.

In fact, I have completely forgotten about the 15% discount offered on Nottingham tickets during the blockade.

This will bring the Nottingham split down to £17.85 (£5.70 + £12.15) each for you.

What!

So a Manchester - Blythe Bridge ticket is cheaper than a Manchester - Stoke ticket? That stinks of Crosscountry worse than a Voyager toilet.

And it appears to be less restrictive too!

Cheaper than stations at either ends of that line.

May well be one of those fares that are used to balance out increases in the fares basket. (Just a guess.)

A good example of a journey where there is no appropriate routeing point for the origin.
