Leicester Square Picc Signage

At the moment due to the advert boards being ripped off on the Eastbound (?) Piccadilly Line platform of Leicester Square, you can just about make out the old signage of when it used to be called Covent Garden. I've googled as to when the changeover of station names happened but there's nothing about it.

Anyone have any clue?

I don't think Leicester Square Station has ever been known as Covent Garden.
1:2500 1910 map shows it as Leicester Square and shows Covent Garden in its current location. Could it be a directional sign?

According to Wikipedia the station was planned to be called Cranbourn Street but the present name was used from opening. Covent Garden was opened with its own name only 4 months later.

I concur. I have read several histories of the Underground, possess a map of lost stations on the network, and I have never seen any reference to Leicester Square once being called Covent Garden.

Or did the original signage say "for Covent Garden" as the opening of that station was later than the rest of the line?

Well, perhaps if the first carriage stopped just into Covent Garden station the last one might still be in Leicester Square. Please don't anyone take this too literally though!

Incidentally, for possibly the first time ever Leicester Square Station will briefly become a bus terminus (for the 176 route) shortly during Crossrail works at its usual Tottenham Court Road terminus.

Oh my - where are they going to stand and turn?! Great Newport round to Cranbourn?

Sounds like a nightmare - surely they would be better off terminating at Trafalgar Square.

Where's this come up? I can't find anything about it happening even though I can see some changes to the route up to February next year.

This disagrees with the info on the TfL website which suggests that just one stop is not being served -stop D at Cambridge Circus - but the route is still started at stop S further north.

I don't think there's enough free stand space there. When the 176 turns there in normal service it's not allowed to stand due to the lack of available space.

The latter have excess amounts of space and the former can stand at least one bus. It's all doable.
