Leeds - what a dump!

Leeds 10 years ago used to be such a nice city. It was clean, inviting, and prosperous.

Now it's getting dirtier by the day and seemingly full of scrotes.

I've just been to Roundhay which is one of the better areas, but not especially clean, and my journey back on the bus via Roundhay Road highlighted just how grim Leeds is. I know many inner city areas are dirty but I challenge anybody to show me a more litter strewn area. Even the city centre is filled with peoples cr*p.

Got help us this summer when the Tour De France comes here. We'll be a national laughing stock.

So, your personal experience of one part of a city is somehow enough to make us an international laughing stock? Right.

I have to say, I'm getting sick to the back teeth of knee-jerk reactions from people who seem determined to want to complain about something. I'm sure you'd have seen exactly the same thing 10 years ago - believe it or not, this sort of thing is getting better, much to the chagrin of the doom-and-gloom crowd.

Well for a start I live in Wakefield, so know Leeds well.

It wasn't just one area, but I highlighted the worst.

If that's the attitude of its residents (Love it or leave it), well it'll explain why it's such a tip.

Poverty looks bad, regardless of the city.

The only places I've seen poverty looking as bad are in Bradford and Mumbai.

Poverty is also not an excuse for littering.

I'm sure if you take population size of Leeds compared to Wakefield, you'd find equel amounts of poverty in both cities. Fact is, when you've got a city the size of Leeds, you will get poverty, like wise, I'd more then happily take you to pleasant thriving areas of the great city.

The small no mark towns of Yorkshire seem to have a hatred of Leeds I'll never understand. Fact is, places such as Xcape would never have been developed if it wasn't in such close proximity of Leeds.

Then don't read threads full of 'knee-jerk reactions from people who want to complain about something'. Then maybe you won't prolong the drivel-fest of reading people complain about something, then people who complain about the complainers, then the people complaining abut those that are complaining about the complainers etc...

Each to their own indeed, although I doubt many people would consider a dirty city an attractive one. Well, maybe outside Yorkshire anyway.

I doubt there is anything unusual about Leeds, it appears to be part and parcel of the modern world that wherever there are people there will be crap all over the place. I remember walking along the Torquay sea front road last summer in the early evening, the beach was deserted but I was utterly gobsmacked by the amount of rubbish strewn all over the beach. It looked just like a rubbish dump.

Bit mean to lump the city of Wakefield in with the "small no-mark towns". In fact I'd be interested what other towns you're so quick to dismiss.

I too went through Chapel Allerton on the way to Roundhay (Street Lane) and it wasn't too bad. They were slight bits of litter, but near bins so possibly rubbish that's blown out.

Roundhay Road though, where my girlfriend works, near Thomas Danby College.... different story, and it's not down to heavy winds.

I went to a motor factors, part way through servicing a van, so I was wearing old tatty clothes with oil stains on them. Stopped off in Paulsgrove on the way back, and felt over dressed.

I might have said in another thread on here at some point, I went to Finsbury Park once, and that was quite grim too.

Bought a car in Eastbourne a few years ago, and stopped at a chip shop before returning home. There were so many foreigners of different nationalities that I felt like I was abroad. The chips were alright though.

I've not tried it myself yet Butts. However, I do have a 3 hour drive to Holyhead starting at 4am tomorrow morning followed by a pleasant 3.5 hour sojourn to Dublin on what could quite possibly turn out to be the Titanic. If I make it that far I have a short drive to the Irish Exhibition Centre where I will spend two days on my feet selling fishing tackle.

Because of this I'm unlikely to bother getting much sleep this evening so why not take this marvellous thread to the next level by selecting ten towns that qualify as dumps and then having a blazing row about which one is the biggest pile of ****.

I'd like to nominate a section of Huddersfield near the centre where my eldest daughter spent her poverty stricken university years. I wish I could remember what it was called..........

There are definitely worse places. I've been pretty good at staying out of the local equivalents of Whythenshawe. Not that much of where I live in Manc is nice! I think until very recently Leeds has lacked some of the prestige that is available in tandem with the poverty and deprivation. The City Centre in Manchester has been on an upward trend since the bomb. Leeds is only just getting there with things like Trinity Leeds, First Direct arena and other niceties like a Hilton and John Lewis on the way.

I find Wakefield just confusing o.O

Another thing that's really great about Leeds that you don't get in Greater Manchester is how easy it is to be 10 minutes away on the train and still in West Yorkshire but it all feels very quaint or semi-rural (for example: Saltaire).

In my own personal musings: much as I despise many things about Leeds (aforementioned mess, drunkards, scrotes, crime etc.) all the places I would choose to live it can't be far down the objective list. I still think Manchester is the Capital of the North (I can never be free of bias on this one but I think I'd still say it's the best northern city), but I'd probably only put Sheffield in second and then Leeds.

I think Leeds becomes a highly charged issue (and I've been especially unlucky in this respect) on here because of the number of members who are either from here or reside at present nearby. I really do wonder sometimes if I walk past you (pl.) in the street there are so many of us!

You should try Leicester if nationalities are your sort of thing

It's also a dump, in certain areas, such as the Highfields estate near the station.

Maybe the two are connected.
