do you mean london midland via West Coast, or East Midlands Trains to St Pancras

im taking it you mean east midlands trains, right it is best to travel after the peak, as you will pay less off peak

a first class anytime rtn via any permitted for 2 adults is £668, this is a walk up fare.

with advances via EMT and Connections

1037 Leeds arr Sheffield 1137 ( This Train will Convey No First Class)
1147 Sheffield arr London St Pancras 1406 ( This Train Does Have 1st Class)

2 Adults £36.00 1st Advance Single this is the cheapest one on the outward journey 11 Aug

Return Journey 13th Aug

No Advances on East Midlands Trains Route, so the £334 Single is Your Best 1st Class Option for That Route

East Coast from Kings Cross to Leeds has £127 First Class Advances from 1010 until 1510,and after that the Price Goes Up to £284.00

If you are happy to leave early then there is 2 direct EM Trains into St. P leaving at:
  • 0525 (a meal is included on this service for 1st Passengers [according to LM Booking Engine])
  • 0634

If you buy on-line through Eastcoast.co.uk you can get First Advance tickets for £113 web only price for Kings Cross to Leeds. Thats for EC departures between 0600 and 1435 on Friday 13th. That £113 would be for both of you.

i have found this option for you.

departures after 0955 from london st pancras to sheffield

0955,1025,1055,1125,1155,1255 1st Advance Single £68.00 for 2adults.

If you Want 1st Class from Leeds to Sheffield with CrossCountry you are better getting the xx55 departures from London St Pancras.

1st Class Advances for the 1221,1421 and 1521 are £33.00 for 2adults
1st Class Advance for the 1321, is £28.00 for 2adults

If you Choose Standard Class from Sheffield to Leeds with any operator

£17.40 Std Anytime Single for 2 adults.

This price of 2 x £18 = £36 for two First Class Advance Leeds - St Pancras singles can be reduced to 2 x £17 = £34 by booking through the East Midlands Trains site. From the front page, click on Click here for more options. After entering Leeds to London St Pancras, choose "Go via Barnsley". This ensures a local Northern service from Leeds, and avoids the faster CrossCountry services, which are very unlikely to have Advance fares available for this journey at short notice. As sonic2009 says, there is no First Class accommodation on the Leeds - Sheffield leg by this route.

Two Advance First Class singles can currently be bought for a total of £34 on the 1037, 1105, 1205, 1805 or 1905 departures on 11 August.
Return Journey 13th Aug

No Advances on East Midlands Trains Route, so the £334 Single is Your Best 1st Class Option for That Route
By entering "via Barnsley", you have opened up First Class Advance tickets for this leg too. I am finding a fault at present where, despite the "via Barnsley" instruction, for the return leg the booking engine is suggesting a walk from St Pancras to Kings Cross followed by an East Coast train to Leeds avoiding Barnsley.

To overcome this if necessary, search for each leg separately as single tickets. There are none left northbound for £17 on 13 August, but you can get two First Class tickets for £27 each, a total of £54, for the 0637 from St Pancras, or 2 x £33 = £66 at 0955, 1055, 1155 or 1255.

John, you mention a fault with the booking software. I have also found this fault with all Trainline based booking sites, but found it to be more general. I have found that when you submit a routeing preference for a return ticket, it takes this preference into account for the outward leg but not for the return leg. Of course, as you say, when booking advance singles, as in this case, this can be overcome by booking as separate single journeys. Does anyone know who would be best to report this fault to?

I agree fully with John's advise to ask to go via Barnsley, also I would suggest booking via www.eastmidlandstrains.co.uk as they give £1 off on all their advance fares. If going via the East Coast, book at www.eastcoast.co.uk
