Try Leeds-Birkenhead Hamilton Square for £27.70.
Leeds - Littleborough £9.60
Littleborough - Liverpool £15.60
Total £25.20
There are even cheaper options than this but it'd mean travelling via Wigan, adding an extra 60 minutes to your journey.
Edit: An extra 2 hours, as buses replace trains WGN - LIV on Sundays, but it'd be Leeds - Rochdale - Wigan - Liverpool for £21.50

as much as I wouldn't like to suggest it here - the coach can be barely 20 minutes slower, and a next day ticket is usually available for about £7.
