What would be the best way to get from Leeds to Liverpool using Northern services only as the only restriction (using their complimentary tickets) during a weekday?

Initially I thought they ran a load of services from Manchester Victoria but it seems this is no longer the case and they actually run those from Piccadilly / Oxford Road these days, it seems as if boarding a Chester service at Leeds then changing at Newton-le-Willows or Warrington Bank Quay may be a slightly better option and avoid the walk across Manchester!

What time are you travelling?

Have you tried using a site that lets you restrict the search to Northern services only?

One way to avoid walking between Manchester stations is to change at Wigan.

What you propose sounds good, possibly better/easier interchange opportunities onwards from Manchester Victoria to Liverpool Lime Street (on Northern services) at Newton-le-Willows, or maybe Earlestown, rather than Warrington Bank Quay, I would suggest.

One alternative way of doing the end-to-end journey would be the hourly Northern service from Leeds to Preston (via Burnley Manchester Road) and change at Preston for the Liverpool Lime Street service (via Wigan).

If given the option between Newton & Earlestown to change from the Leeds - Chester to the Liverpool stopper, I would go for Newton-Le-Willows. Same platform rather than a bit of a walk. Earlestown would have been OK had Northern been running the Warrington Bank Quay - Liverpool stopper more frequent than 2 trains a day.

From a brief glance, it's roughly a 20-25 minute wait at Newton-Le-Willows

I’ve gone Lime Street-Wigan-Victoria-Calder Valley-Leeds before now.

Yesterday I met up with my dad in Manchester and his TPE back to Lime Street was cancelled, however the Northern Chester service dropped him at Newton with not long to wait for the Chat Moss stopper.

Thanks, travelling early morning on a Monday and returning late afternoon / early evening later in the week so may do via Preston / Wigan on the outward and a different way back on the return :)

I don’t believe it!

On the 12:42 Leeds - Chester…which now looks to be terminating at Victoria due to lack of train crew!

What is the next best option?

EDIT : Looks like they’ve now found some train crew!
