Advance purchase with East Coast, as there are not many HSTs on Cross Country to Glasgow, so if you don't like Voyagers your best bet is to go with East Coast. There is one direct HST from Leeds to Edinburgh at 0710, otherwise change at York.

There won't be many good deals at this late stage I suspect.

If you don't mind going standard on the slow route, it's £45.40 for a walk-up return fare from Leeds to Glasgow Route Appleby. This is an Anytime (SOR) so the outward can be broken overnight up to 5 days, and the return must be completed within 1 month.

And as the £45.40 return Leeds - Glasgow Route Appleby is an Anytime Return, it allows you to travel in First Class at no extra cost on any Virgin Train between Carlisle amd Glasgow on 31 July and 7 August, both Saturdays.

The cheapest way would be :
Leeds - Manchester FTPE
Manchester - Preston FTPE
Preston - Glasgow FTPE

There are some direct Leeds - Preston FTPE services
Equally, between Preston - Glasgow my personal choice would be Virgin Trains
However since you are travelling on a Saturday there is little advantage (you would need to walk to the shop for complimentary drinks and snacks)

Another alternative is to book Standard and then upgrade with Weekend First

Option 1: Direct Leeds to Edinburgh HST:
Travelling East Coast is the only way to enjoy HST travel or loco hauled (in the form of East Coast 225 trains), although taking this option will probably require changing trains twice to reach Glasgow (Once at York and once at Edinburgh).
HST options are:
07:10 Leeds to Edinburgh, arr. 10:21.
10:45 Edinburgh Waverley to Glasgow Queen Street, arr. 11:37 (Scotrail).
First class single £43.00.

Option 1A: York to Edinburgh HST:
Further HSTs depart York at 12:29, 13:41, 13:59 and 16:01. Which will require a connection from Leeds to York, and a change at Edinburgh onto a Scotrail service will be necessary.

Option 2: Cheapest York to Glasgow fares:
The cheapest way to travel first class with East Coast is to book the outward journey in two stages: From Leeds to York and York to Glasgow.
The cheapest first class single I can find for York to Edinburgh is £36.00 valid on the following services:

1. 11:59 York to Edinburgh (arr. 14:31)
14:45 Edinburgh Waverley to Glasgow Queen Street (arr. 15:37)
225 train to Edinburgh.
2. 13:41 York to Edinburgh (arr. 16:13)
16:30 Edinburgh Waverley to Glasgow Queen Street (arr. 17:21)
This service is an HST to Edinburgh.

Option 3: Cheapest York to Glasgow DIRECT fares:
Direct trains from York to Glasgow Central, operated by 225 trains, offer first class singles for £42.50.

These depart York at:
09:06 (Arr. Glasgow Central 12:47)
15:00 (Arr. Glasgow Central 18:50)
Other direct York to Glasgow Central services, which operate on a two hourly frequency approximately on the hour, are priced at £48.00 first single.

It is then a case of adding £10.40 standard single (which can be bought from the station on the day) for the Leeds to York journey for options 2 and 3 above, which is valid on all trains between Leeds and York, and journey time is approximately 25 minutes.

Return fares on August 7th from Glasgow are similar.

As has been stated above, there are cheaper ways of reaching Glasgow, using either the S&C or Transpennine Express and Virgin West Coast. But, if you really want a HST or loco hauled journey, bear in mind that Transpennine, Virgin and the Settle and Carlisle are all the domain of either diesel or electric units exclusively (no HSTs or locos), and also that the Settle and Carlisle line does not offer first class accommodation.

Thought the 07.10 went direct to Aberdeen?

Yes, the 0710 does go to Aberdeen. I meant direct from Leeds to Edinburgh, not Glasgow. This is the only East Coast train from Leeds to the North. If the OP wishes to take a 91 or HST, at any other time, then a change will be required at York (and probably Edinburgh too).

I don't think there is any chance of getting a HST north on XC on Saturday 31st July, however for the return on Saturday 7th August, the 0700 (1V54) or 0900 (1V58 ) XC services from Glasgow Central should be a good bet. I've seen confirmation of 1V54 being a HST on several occasions but cannot confirm 1V58, but I have read 'gen' stating that it is (or was) booked HST.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
I reckon both 0700 and 0900 from GLC are HSTs, because when I searched for seats near toilets it went up to seat 70. I don't think Voyagers have 70 seats in any coach!

Also this seat diagram indicates the 0900 is a HST. Hints include: coach B is a composite (1st & std) coach; and it is showing as 6 reservable cars long (HSTs are 7 coaches, with 1 unreservable); Voyagers don't have a Coach E. If it was 2x Voyager it would show as 8 car.

1V54 and 1V58 are both shown in TRUST as a HST on Saturday 7th August.

On Saturday 31st July, the following two XC servives are shown in TRUST as HST:

1S47 1707 from Leeds - train destination Dundee so a change at Edinburgh required.

1S51 1807 from Leeds - direct to Glasgow Central so no change required.
