Hi,

Could anyone tell me any decent splits between Leeds & Bristol Temple Meads please?

No railcards & just one person travelling.

Travelling Fri 21st Nov between 4pm-5pm and returning Sun 23rd Nov between 6pm & 7pm.

I have tried the usual splitting points, does anyone else have any other ideas?

Thanks in advance

Do you have any sort of price target in mind?

You can do the journey for a little over £90.

Outwards on the 1611 arr 1943
Returning on the 1730 arr 2106
Trainsplit suggests

Off Peak return LDS - DBY (£33.50)
Off Peak return DBY - BHM (£16.70)
Off Peak return BHM - CNM (£24.00)
Off Peak Day singles between CNM and BRI (£8.70 x 2)

CNM = Cheltenham Spa. BRI = Bristol TM

You may be interested to learn that a forum member has created a "split ticket" booking engine called Trainsplit (linked to above by JakeF). It's a work in progress but it's worth a look.

It's limited at present by the poor Fujitsu routeing engine. It will be able to identify more splitting opportunities when it uses a routeing engine created by another forum member. I've seen a preview and it looks great!

Note that the best savings when you "split" walk-up fares on this route are for Day Returns, hence why the "usual splitting points" may not have given you great results.

CrossCountry charge a premium to their longer-distance customers, and that extra income is what they're banking on to generate the cash that'll be shipped off to Germany. So by only paying the sum of what shorter-distance customers pay, you're helping to make the route less profitable and lucrative for this appalling Company.

That would be me! I've just ran your journey through the new system Yorkie is referring to and you can get it a little cheaper. Here are some options, all of which will slow down your journey because you need to find trains that stop at all the split points:

£87.40 via Cam and Dursley said:
£33.50 Leeds to Derby (OFF-PEAK R, ANY PERMITTED)
£16.70 Derby to Birmingham Stns (OFF-PEAK R, ANY PERMITTED)
£24.00 Birmingham Stns to Cam & Dursley (OFF-PEAK R, ANY PERMITTED)
£6.60 Cam & Dursley to Bristol Temple M (ANYTIME DAY S, ANY PERMITTED)
£6.60 Bristol Temple M to Cam & Dursley (ANYTIME DAY S, ANY PERMITTED)

£81.70 via Worcester said:
£33.50 Leeds to Derby (OFF-PEAK R, ANY PERMITTED)
£26.00 Derby to Worcester Stns (OFF-PEAK R, ANY PERMITTED)
£22.20 Worcester Stns to Bristol Temple M (OFF-PEAK R, NOT VIA BIRMNGHM)

£80.70 via Outwood and Worcester said:
£2.50 Leeds to Outwood (ANYTIME DAY S, ANY PERMITTED)
£27.50 Outwood to Derby (OFF-PEAK R, ANY PERMITTED)
£26.00 Derby to Worcester Stns (OFF-PEAK R, ANY PERMITTED)
£22.20 Worcester Stns to Bristol Temple M (OFF-PEAK R, NOT VIA BIRMNGHM)
£2.50 Outwood to Leeds (ANYTIME DAY S, ANY PERMITTED)

Finally, the absolute cheapest I can find without resorting to routeing anomolies or starting/stopping short follows. But this would be an interesting journey as Norton Bridge is a permanent bus replacement service (you may be able to stop short at Stafford though) and Great Malvern is a double back (you may be able to stop short at Worcester though, and possibly even buy the last ticket from Worcester to save another £1).

£77.70 via Ashton said:
£16.80 LEEDS to ASHTON-UNDER-LYNE (OFF-PEAK R, ANY PERMITTED)
£17.20 ASHTON-UNDER-LYNE to STONE (STAFFS) (ANYTIME R, ANY PERMITTED)
£3.00 STONE (STAFFS) to NORTON BRIDGE (ANYTIME DAY S (x2), ANY PERMITTED)
£17.40 NORTON BRIDGE to GREAT MALVERN (OFF-PEAK R, ANY PERMITTED)
£23.30 GREAT MALVERN to BRISTOL TEMPLE MEADS (OFF-PEAK R, NOT VIA BIRMNGHM)

An excellent example would be Manchester - Stafford. Anytime day return £23.50, priced by Northern.

But the stop next to Manchester Victoria, Moston, is priced by CrossCountry. And the Anytime Return is £67!

In short, nobody should ever pay XC's walk-up prices. The more people on this forum asking for advice on fares, the better.

You could do MANCHESTER to Stafford for ~£17 return by splitting at Stoke and getting Virgin Only return Manchester to Stoke (2 trains per hour most of the day), then a return Stoke to Stafford for any train.
