I'm off on an evening out in Barnsley 2moro. When I checked train times last one back to Leeds is half nine. Any reason for this? I checked and there is one from Barnsley to hudds just after eleven which gets in just before midnight and I can then get a tpexpress at 12-10 back to Leeds. Will a Leeds - Barnsley day return be valid this route?

I cannot answer your query but I suggest if the ticket is not valid via Huddersfield that you should buy a Leeds - Denby Dale ticket then a Denby Dale - Barnsley one. This could save a fair bit of money (usually these splits are cheaper).

It's half 10 the rest of the week so must be expecting lots of rowdy behaviour or engineering work.

For some reason the later train terminates at Wakefield. By and large, the Hallam line is pretty dire for evening services.

A rumour I heard is they had a lot of trouble between the Barnsley and Wakefield journey in particular on Friday and Saturday so cut the service. Seems a bit odd but there you go.

I agree it is annoying though, I live in Castleford so if I go to Barnsley these days I usually leave it until Sunday where the last train back is 23:10!

It mustn't be as bad as it used to be.

In 1990, the last train from Barnsley to Leeds on a Mon-Thu was 2249 (Sunday was 2325!). On a Friday and Saturday it was 1941 with three trains not running the portion of route between Sheffield and Wakefield! Back then the last service to Huddersfield was at 2106.

Not rumour, but fact. The trains were cut back on Fri/Sat evenings over 20 years ago now. The trouble was caused by already boozed up louts heading for the infamous Westgate nightlife. As Deerfold mentioned, some of the originally cut trains have since been restored.

Regarding the ticket, a Leeds - Barnsley day return is not valid via Huddersfield.

According to RSH, a Leeds to Dodworth ticket is valid via Barnsley or Huddersfield and only 60p more than a Leeds - Barnsley.

Then a Leeds to Penistone off peak day return ticket at £8.40 will allow you to travel direct to Barnsley at 1732 and break your journey there, resuming it on the 2308 to Huddersfield (calling Penistone 2325) for onward connection to Leeds.

But I expect it will be accepted on both trains without question.

Possibly, but if not then a new ticket will need to be bought.

Considering the alternatives offered above, I don't think it's worth taking that gamble.
