Leeds Station is at the south western end of the shopping area of Leeds. A bit of a walk from Harvey Nicks, but not that far. I'll let someone more familiar with the street names give you directions
Through the barrier line, straight ahead out of main exit, follow footpath to the right, and keep following until you come to a main street, turn right and cross over the road, past the building site and bus stops until you come to a large pedestrian street (Briggate), turn left and keep walking that gives you access to everything in terms of shops.
Right? Would turning left after walking past M&S not be the better option, and past The Queens and over the crossing?
Thinking about it, does turning rght bring you past the NCP (I may be going back a few years here!!!)
Overall though, Leeds station is itself not far from the shops, though not necessarily all of them. If you aren't too sure, there is the Leeds City Bus which stops right outside the entrance straight opposite the barriers and costs 50p per single journey and takes a circular route round the city - it all depends what you are after, really
No I'd go right out of the station as well.
You can tell I'm not au fait with Leeds can't you? Oh the shame when I only live about 10-15 miles away as well :/

Still my excuse is that I went to school about 30 minutes down the railway (Fitzwilliam was the nearest station to where I was) so most Saturdays were spent wandering aimlessly around Leeds.

I often do that as well.
No it's not far to the shops from the station. It should be 5/10 minuites walk depending on the crossing sequence.
You go through the barriers, Straight on to the doors by Burger King. Turn left out of the door.
Go past the Visitors centre and at the traffic lights, cross the road so you have the Park Plaza Hotel to your left and Flares Night club to your right.
Walk down this road, past a 'Multiyork' furniture place till you reach a McDonalds/Building Site. Turn left up this road (pedestrianised) and you will be on Briggate which is one of the main shopping streets.
I think this is the fastest route, if you turn right you basically go in a big loop for no reason.

As well as Briggate (where the big shops tend to be) I'd recommend a look at the Corn Exchange (south east corner of the city centre), not because its particularly cheap but at least it offers something a bit "different" from many city centres (with the same shops in every High Street)...
Alas no longer with the famous condom shop since it was gentrified a few years ago !
Alternatively go straight across the road outside the station entrance, down the steps to the road below, straight across and into the Scarbrough Taps. Stay there until it's time to go home, which will be a lot more fun than fighting through the crowds of idendikit consumers desperate for 'bargains' to add to their already precipitous mountains of debt.
Or even better, turn right at the bottom of the steps, go under the railway bridge, past the hotel, across the road, past the big tall grey building that looks like a dalek and into The Grove which is much nicer IMO (and you may get a bit of live music as well !)

If you turn left and go down into the old Wellington Station concourse, there is a really tricky ramp so be really careful you don't twist your ankle otherwise you might have to stay in the station all day whilst Mrs W goes shopping.
In the event that does happen, I'd recommend waiting in the Wetherspoons just after the ramp on the left

OTOH, if he does manage it to Briggate, there's always Whitelocks, Ship Inn, Angel Inn & Pack Horse
Exactly; and anyone of those is better than the 'Spoons on the station, which is just about the worst of all their pubs in Leeds - and I've been to em all!

Its not that bad - a thousand times better than Coopers at the station! It's exactly the kind of pub you need in a busy train station like Leeds - handy for a quick drink/ bite, not suited to those staying for a long "session" but there are plenty other pubs for those markets.
I'm not sure you'd necessarily want to do that, to be honest (or if you do, stick to the Wessie :P)
