Power company is reporting an interuption resulting in a power failure. Check BBC News and bbc red button they have an article on it.

Local news reporting that it will at least 8pm before it gets back, passangers are currently been told to find alternative ways home. Reported that local buses are rammed. Other stations are also affected : Huddersfield, Wakefield & York etc.

Update from the scene, chaos at York, TPE cancelling, XC running straight to Sheffield, am at Burley Park goin to Leeds via Harrogate...

Now is one of the very few times that I wish this forum had a "Like" button. There are so many situations in life where the answer should invariably be "pub".

I'm suddenly quite glad that I'm being driven up north tomorrow, although fingers crossed nonetheless that the problems will be well and truly sorted by then and everything back to normal.

Look Leeds claimed (in a piece about the disruption) that Leeds was "the busiest train station outside London". Some mistake, surely?

I suppose they could argue that Leeds is the largest city (by population) outside of London to only have one railway station? A quick google suggests they might be right, although the pedant in me thinks that Leeds is really two stations bolted together

Sorry to be pedantic, but ...... the City of London only has a resident population of less than five figures (7,185 in the 2001 census). You're lumping in a whole other city (Westminster) and lots of different neighbouring boroughs to come up with that metropolitan conurbation figure of 7.2m.

Mrs O was returning from her weekly stay in London, expecting to arrive in Ilkley at 19:30. When I saw this thread, I checked on NRE, and there were apocalyptic visions of massive delays; the news was full of it. So, when she rang at 19:20, I was prepared to have to drive off to Doncaster to pick her up. Not a bit - she was in Ben Rhydding, and could I come to help her with her bags. Her train from London had arrived on time, and the Ilkley train had left on time, no one had mentioned problems, no one had mentioned delays, and Leeds station seemed no different from usual. Yet the evening news said things were only just getting back to normal.
What actually did happen? And why did a short power outage apparently have such a major effect?

I don't know, it was just a quick mention (not quantified). I'd have thought Birmingham New Street was busier (as another station outside London), but am happy to be corrected.

We left York at about 20:05 and must have got through Leeds about 20:30.

Things must have been getting back to normal by then, although there was a 185 in the sidings at Holgate, and two more on the main line waiting to get into York.

At Leeds we went into P16 as usual and there was an HST in P15 (unusual?).

On leaving Leeds, there were two 333's checked outside Leeds with the drivers using the SPTs.

I should have said I was grateful to those who posted on here as there wasn't much information available at York, other than the driver making a PA that we were delayed awaiting our guard due to earlier problems at Leeds.

Birmingham New street has 1350 trains per day, Leeds has just over 1000. A disruption for an hour or so at this stations will probably affect 60-100 trains directly, 200-300 indirectly, and then further knock on delay.

I was on the HST, it was the XC Edinburgh train. Probably put it on 15 due to stranded units blocking normal platforms.

Westminster is a separate city to London only in the most technical sense.
