I know leeds have just made final at Wembley but I'd never imagine the higher tier of tickets where this high just for a single. As I'm typing somebody mustn't paid it as its now sold out. £278.50 with a change at York on a Sunday off peak? Hopefully they're able to put football specials on

Why don't you just buy a ticket for a different journey, but still get on the train you originally planned to get? The 'sold out' claim is meaningless. Just ignore it.

To clarify that if you do this it must be for a flexible ticket (ie Super Off Peak, Off Peak or Anytime) and not and Advance ticket.

A super off-peak single (valid at any time on a Sunday) is £70.20, or £46.30 with railcard, and cannot sell out. It'll be most straightforward to just buy one at the station (a ticket office will certainly work; some ticket machines might, I'm not sure about LNER's or Northern's), but the "select a later train" trick mentioned above also works if you really want to buy online.

There are quite a number of work arounds on this one, personally I’d be looking at booking Hull Trains or (more riskily) Grand Central from Doncaster for quieter and cheaper trains.

This is a good shout. Using Doncaster, most trains are showing nothing for next Sunday (including GC) - but Hull Trains seems to be OK. Selby might also be a suggestion if reasonable, prior to others joining at Doncaster then. Equally, works as well for later in the day.
