Leeds City station had a complex role with the North Eastern Railway, the Midland and the LNW all using it. So does anyone know what the station pilot arrangements would have been in the mid-50s? A Holbeck 3FT? Something from Neville Hill? Or something else?

Thanks.

I only visited Leeds City Station once in steam days. On that day in August 1962, the station pilots were Neville Hill allocated 2-6-4Ts 42188, 80118, 80119 and Holbeck allocated 2-6-2T 41267. It would appear that Neville Hill was the main provider, and maybe so in the mid-fifties.

Thank you for that. The 4MTs didn't arrive until the later 1950s, but Neville Hill had some ex-Hull & Barnsley N13s (0-6-2Ts) in 1955; perhaps they were used? There were very few tank engines on the allocation.

Having just spoken to my father who grew up in Rothwell (South Leeds) and would have been spotting regularly around Leeds in the mid-fifties, he seems to think that at Leeds City station they just used locos that were spare on depot for pilot duties, or a train engine between duties, rather than specifically allocated pilot locos.

Leeds Central, on the other hand, had specific station pilots allocated from Copley Hill depot.

Remember that Leeds City was still very much two separate stations into the 1950s - the Midland side (ex-Wellington) and the NE.
