Leaving a journey early

Quick question.

Tomorrow I have to travel from Darlington to Newcastle, and then the Metro Centre back to Darlington (changing at Newcastle of course). I am going to be given a lift from Newcastle to the Metro.

Am I able to buy a return ticket to the Metrocentre, but leave at Newcastle? Or will they not let me through the barriers?

Both the Anytime Day Return (there are no restrictions on Anytime tickets anyway) and the Off-Peak Day Return allow a break of journey (which finishing short is classed as) so there should be no issue there that I can see.

Depending on how well they are programmed, the ticket itself might not work the barriers at Newcastle, but the chap supervising the barrier should let you through anyway.

They should let you through, but you could always tell them you are going to WH Smiths or Sainsbury's if they don't. Normally if you show them something orange and ticket-like they'll let you through.
