Usual commute is Leatherhead to Paddington changing to the District line at Wimbledon.

As I leave before 6.30 the new off peak fare available on contactless looks to be useful for me.

According to TfL, the through off peak contactless fare to Paddington is £10 (regardless of route).

But the individual legs of my trip would be £4.30 (Leatherhead to Wimbledon off peak) plus £3.80 (Wimbledon to Paddington peak); so nearly 20% cheaper despite “peak” pricing on one leg.

If I tapped the pink readers at Wimbledon is the system clever enough to split the fare into its cheaper constituent parts? Or do I need to juggle two different contactless cards, for the NR and tube legs respectively, in order to make the saving?

No, that doesn't work like that

The only use of pink readers is to signal to the system you avoided Zone 1. They do not split a journey.

For a journey into Z1, they won't be of any use.

Simply touch out and back in at Wimbledon, rather than use the pink reader.

The pink reader has no effect because there isn't a separate fare from Leatherhead to Paddington set up to recognise it. For separate fares to be charged for the two legs requires the journey to be broken by barrier touches.

The barriers at Wimbledon should only be exit / entry gates as they cover the entire station, so they ought to break the journey.

I also think using the gates at Wimbledon to touch out and back in would break the journey. It could also be slightly more convenient to buy a single ticket for Leatherhead-Wimbledon (also now £4.30) and just touch out using the tube platform validators.

That fare isn't available as a paper ticket until 0930.

No, the platform 10 validators have continuation exit set so you won't be able to touch back in again.

No. All yellow validators at Wimbledon are set to continuation exit. You'd have to wait 15 minutes between touches. You shouldn't have any issues at the gateline if you simply exit and re-enter.

The barriers will let you through again straight away - I've never had any issues splitting a PAYG journey that way. Standalone readers would require you to either use two separate cards, or to wait 15 mins if using the same card.

I'm not aware of any scenario where a tfl gate wouldn't let you through with an active card - they're not that smart, tap now, fare calculated later

I probably would just use 2 cards for convenience but the diversion of exiting the gates having come up from platform 5 to going down to the district line isn't far enough to add more than 30 seconds to the walk

Exit and re-entry at the gate lines definitely works fine, I sometimes do this on the commute home to save a bit of money (Bank to Wimbledon via Waterloo on Oyster exiting at Wimbledon, then re-enter using SWR Tap2go card to travel from Wimbledon to Leatherhead/Bookham)
