Least Favourite Scottish Station

Having seen Favourite Scottish Station, I decided on the opposite.

One for me would be Fort William, no character whatsoever.

It is either Thurso or Wick - one is ok, but one is dreary with a huge platform covering and a filthy concourse and 1 platform with an occassionall member of ignorant staff?

I've always found High Street to be quite dreary

I like Fort William. It's got everything you need. Yes it's formal, and reminds me of a mini Euston, but for me it's the focal point of the town, and always has a flow of people through it, even when there are no trains due.

Least favourite for me. Cartsdyke has very little going for it. Except it's handy for me when I'm up there.

I don't want to upset Matt, but Dundee would have to be suggested - its badly located (over the ring road from the city centre, so it used to require the big "glass" bridge), its hemmed in by walls underground, its a pretty poor introduction to the city for outsiders (especially those who've come from Fife over the Tay Bridge).

Glasgow Queen Street is fairly poor too - it'd be okay for a Metro station, but it really struggles to handle the mix of longer distance servics (the Edinburgh via Falkirk line is hamstrung by the short platforms at Queen Street that stopped longer trains being used on the busy service - when HSTs used to run there they blocked off access to another platform in the throat).

Blantyre - the land that time forgot, complete with SPTE orange signage from at least the early 90s. The place generally looks a bit dilapidated and isn't somewhere I'd want the girlfriend to be alone at night.

I find this line to be quite a "b*llache" if you'll pardon the pun. And the language.

It's just miserable. Far too many people use it now too.


The other dreadful station is Falkirk Grahamston - it's simply not long enough to cope with the Chieftan or the Sleeper and is wild and windy.

There's plenty of space at either end to extend the platform to an adequate length.

For a complete rebuild, there's possibly even enough girth to rebuild as a 4 platform through station. I'd go for acquiring the PO building, creating a new station entrance at that level with modern over-bridge access along with lifts etc.

Once there was capacity there. Run a service between Grangemouth and Alloa...

Branchton and its hideous tumour of a station building. Is there really nothing else they could have done with it other than coat it in the ugliest corrugated steel known to mankind?

Greenock Central isn't too nice either, but it must have been rather special to see it back in't day with its roof and whatnot.

Gourock is another - didn't they have to abandon part of the old concourse building because of subsidence or something? It's not too bad with the new building but the concourse still looked worse for wear last time I was there.

Kelvindale and similar for their long winded paths down to the station.
Cumbernauld for looking quite shabby and dreary when I was there.

Carstairs Village is rather nice though, rather English with its village green if you like that sort of thing.

Re. the station ~ what has happened to the station buildings?

The old ones were demolished around about the same time the station stopped being used for joining and splitting Glasgow / Edinburgh trains on a regular basis, mid-90s or somewhere around there. They looked beyond repair though, neglected for years. At least it got a replacement building though!

I couldn't pick one particular station as being the worst but I'm no fan of more recently built stations which tend to be grey soulless affairs. Alloa springs to mind but at least it is indicative of the town it serves. I'd put Camelon on the list too.

This is a trend being repeated on Irish Rail too. Probably down to the need to save money which results in the most spartan station possible which will still allow passengers on and off a train while complying with H&S regulations.

The fact that all the metal tends to be bare doesn't help either.

Whinhill station and the area around it- The Strone is a fearful place especially when the kids and neds are hanging around.
