Does anyone know if there is work being done on the Leamside Line, going towards Durham earlier on the bus and saw 2 people in hi-vis vests on the line...

Being the suspicious person I am, I was thinking they were up to no good

I know Network Rail have been removing the rails so they can't be stolen (and before you say that this proves they don't want to reopen it, the rails would have needed replacing anyway if the line were to reopen). Thread here.

If you thought that they there illegally, contact the BTP on 0800 40 50 40.
They will be able to find out from network rail whether they were doing work on the line.

Looks like the Rails have been lifted, there is a bit work going on in a field next to the line on Broomside Lane in Durham, dunno if that has anything to do with the line itself

Hi,

They are removing the remaining track to prevent further theft. Residents close to the line have apparently received a mailshot about this.
Network Rail say that this will not affect plans whether to reopen the line or not as the line would need completely replacing anyway if it were to reopen (here's hoping).

Yes, heres hoping mate...I bet it would be a massive job to bring the line back into general use, not only the track, but obviously signalling, reinstating level crossings, there is also some landslips near Nissan and parts overgrown with all kinds of foliage

Network were in talks recently with Durham County Council regarding reopening the line, DCC are really keen to see traffic back on the entire route. Trackwork have been given the contract to remove the old rails.

2 trains a week,Tuesdays n Thursdays,go down the line a couple of hundred yards,to the back of tursdale engineering and get loaded up with old sleepers to be removed,these come by lorry from where they are being lifted,to be load onto the wagons.
