Leaky Mark 4 carriages

My wife and I traveled East Coast train the other in heavy but not torrential rain. There was already a leak above a seat which got worse and around 3 more developed.

Is this normal as I could see it on a Pacer but have never seen such a thing, especially on a premium refurbed train?

It did seem to be a leak rather than something like an AC drip but will stand corrected.

Probably an A/C fault -being trained in it, I would suggest a broken condense pump, relatively easy fix. Causes about 90% of air con leakages.

I presume MK4s are a little more watertight, but it's certainly very common indeed for MK3s to leak rather badly.

I cant say i have known a MK iv leak on anyone before!

Sounds odd for a Mk4. I would indeed suggest reporting to staff, as it does sound like a component or seal failure, which really should probably be looked at just in case it gets worse and any water makes stuff noticeably damp!

[On light rail... Tramlink CR4000s leak on people occasionally (don't sit in the facing seats in the gangway connection when it's raining). In terms of heavy rail, I have occasionally (and very rarely) known water to get into 165/166 air handling systems during torrential rain, and then drip on people. Other than that, I've never known it, apart from windows being slightly open or having slightly dodgy seals.]

I've notived its not uncommon to see water coming through the corridor connections on 156's and similar when pulling off after a long stand in the rain..

That's a separate problem, where the seal on the double glazing has gone, I understand the water that gets in is condensation (which has no way to get out again) rather than rainwater. It has afflicted stock to varying degrees ever since double glazing came in. The water sloshes back and forth with acceleration/braking.

The very first double glazed stock was some of the new electrification 4-CEP on the Kent Coast in the 1960s, and being pioneers they had this problem more than most. A commuter wrote in and suggested that Southern Region might look into developing a breed of flat goldfish to go inside!

Ahh okay never thought it could be the condensation that caused it. And it certainly did slosh about, shocked me when I had my head up against it. I thought we were about to be hit by some rouge Nottinghamshire wave

It certainly isn't uncommon for mk iv to leak during heavy rain. I've know it happen many times throughout my 10 years working on them. Like anything, if poorly maintained it will fail. I was on a 61 reg bus that was leaking the other day

See such things happen on 158's but never Mk4's.

On 319s in the rain you get a waterfall between the carriages!
