Leagrave - Chatham

Hello.

I need a ticket for my 69 year old dad who is going to a wedding in Chatham.
He will be going from Leagrave to Chatham on Thursday 18 August and returning on Sunday 22 August. He can travel any time as long as its not too late at night and doesnt have any railcards.

the ticket i can see is a Leagrave to Chatham off peak return any permitted route. valid after 0959 on the Wednesday, and returning anytime on the Sunday. Priced @ £36.60.

And with only one change on trains at London St Pancras. Just changing from First Captial Connect to Southeastern High Speed. with Journey Times of between 1hr 35mins and 1hr 50mins.

other memebers may have advances on this, as i dont have much knowledge of the london area for splitting saving money, im sure yorkie will be the man for this.the ticket expert.

A railcard is £26 for the year and would save £12.45 on that ticket above (cost with railcard £24.15, or £50.15 including the railcard), so if he is likely to make just one similar cost journey over the next twelve months, it'd be worth his while buying one.

My dad bought his senior railcard at the weekend.
Also at the weekend he got some news about a freind who died so he now has to go to a funeral in Tunbridge Well on Monday 9th august at 11:30 and what i would like to know can he travel peak time throught London with the railcard discount as it says that it varies from train company to train company.
I have looked on First Capital Connect at with a railcard it shows prices for trains leaving at 8am but i dont want to buy this and then he gets a penalty fare.
Any help would be gratefull.

The Senior Railcard is only of use on journeys within the former Network Southeast area when the Off-Peak day fare (CDS/CDR) becomes available, in this case it's the 0929 service.

Sorry, no. The restriction is

Railcard discounts are not available on tickets for morning peak period services, for journeys wholly within London & South East Network Railcard area on Mondays to Fridays.

The map of the London & South East Network Railcard area is here and unfortunately both Leagrave and Tunbridge Wells are in that area. The morning peak period services are defined by the phrase discounts are not available on any ticket type until the corresponding Off-Peak Day (CD) fare becomes available. For a Leagrave - Tunbridge Wells ticket, the first journey on which the £15.20 Railcard discounted Off-Peak Day Return fares are available is

09:29 Leagrave - London Bridge 10:26
10:39 London Bridge - Tunbridge Wells 11:27

Unfortunately that is too late for a funeral in Tunbridge Wells starting at 11:30. The Anytime Day Return would cost £37.90 route + Not Valid on HS1 and £38.60 route + Any Permitted. I'm afraid buying one full price single and one discounted single doesn't reduce the price.

The best I can come up with is to split the tickets at London Bridge, where you would be changing trains in any case.

Leagrave-London Bridge - anytime return £22.40 (no railcard discount available) - make sure it is a point to point ticket and NOT a london travelcard or London zones 1&2 ticket as this will cost more.

Yes, that's a good split. The £22.40 ticket is issued as LEAGRAVE - LONDON THAMESLINK and is valid to/from any of St Pancras, Farringdon, City Thameslink, Blackfriars, London Bridge or Elephant & Castle.

I would buy the two return tickets in advance on the internet and collect them from one of the machines at Leagrave station. Avoid thetrainline, which adds additional charges. I find East Coast easiest.

0913 Leagrave - Luton Airport Parkway 0920 (Stay On Train)
0920 Luton A Parkway - London Bridge 1011
1023 London Bridge - Tunbridge Wells 1109

Leagrave - Luton Airport Parkway Anytime Day Rtn without Railcard £4.50
Luton Aiport Parkway - Tunbridge Wells Off Peak Day Rtn (Not Valid on HS1) with railcard £15.20

total cost £19.70, this is just an option for you.
