Law Junction in the 1960s

In the 1960s there were extensive marshalling yards on both sides of the line just to the south of Law Junction. Timetables of the era suggest about five trains a day arriving from Carlisle, with a similar number heading north to a range of destinations. The reverse direction is similar. A 1950s timetable shows substantionally more trains. But none of the timings suggest that an arrival has a corresponding departure for the loco to continue or return home with, and as far as I can see there are no turntables in the area. WTTs of the era do not generally show light engines so there are no clues there. My questions are:

• If the engines ran light to and from shed for servicing etc, was it to Carstairs, Motherwell or where?
• If they didn't run to shed somewhere, how did they turn?
• Did train engines do the shunting to form their trains, or were pilots employed?

I'm sure answers will bring on more questions, but that's certainly enough to start with.
