Hello,

I was passing Salisbury the other day, and I noted that something had been using the line from Laverstock North to South junction. PSUL says no passenger trains run that way - what else would use that line?

I have gone that way on Charter trains. Last time was with Tornado coming back from Swanage to Waterloo.
Some freight to/from Southampton could go that way.

Does an Arriva Cross Country not run that way during the evening for retention of Route Knowledge for diversions ?

XC's last regular passenger working to Salisbury via Laverstock N & S Jns was re-routed to run via Winchester and terminate at Eastleigh from Dec 2011.

There seems to be only one XC ECS that uses the route in the current timetable, a Sunday morning Eastleigh to Reading, no return direction is showing in open train times, but this isn't unusual IMX, they alter the route learning moves from time to time, and can maintain knowledge in cab rides with SWT anyway.

SWT use the route as a turning triangle for Salisbury based stock of course, that could happen any time, and there are also two late night ECS moves diagrammed to run South to North and then to the depot.

Several overnight container freights can go that way if the direct line from Southampton to Basingstoke is closed for engineering work as well, I think there are a few freights actually booked that way as well.

Thanks all for the replies. I won't be in the country for the next XC diversion, so I shall have to wait until the next time! Hadn't realised there was any freight that went that way.

Thank you
