Lausanne to Kefalonia

Does anyone have any bright ideas about how to do the above journey on the evening of October 11 or the morning of October 12?

I see there is a flight from Vienna to Kefalonia on Saturday afternoon but if that was the option then any ideas on a decent route to get to Vienna airport?

If you don't want to fly from Switzerland, your best bet is probably Munich (6h to Munich compared to the 10h minimum to Wien). There is a Condor flight from Munich but it's at 5:50am

You can just get to MUC at 10pm on Oct 11 by starting at 3pm from Lausanne

As bonkers as it sounds, flying from Basel via Gatwick could be the cheapest option. Worldwide by easyJet (their connections division) offers you a through booking for CHF 82 (around £72). Would involve an overnight stay at Gatwick, at your own cost, though.

Is Kefalonia set in stone as the destination? If you're just aiming for a Greek island then Corfu can be reached for £25 with Ryanair from "Milan" Bergamo on the Friday evening. I'd imagine an Advance-type ticket to Bergamo wouldn't cost the earth from Lausanne, but I could be wrong.

It's not actually for me (I'd take the train and the 2 ferries) but it needs to be Kefalonia (or possibly Zakinthos to then ferry to Kefalonia). Would a sleeper train to Vienna work maybe?

There are Nightjets from Zürich at 21.40 (NJ 467) or from Bregenz/Feldkirch (NJ447, new stock and possibly easier/cheaper to book).

The Man in Seat61 (who has just updated his advice) comments that through fares from other Swiss origins on 467 are often very little more than the fare from Zürich.

Alternatively you could use day trains with an overnight in (say) Innsbruck.

Night Jet 447 runs Bregenz (d 2140) to Wien (a 0658). To reach Bregenz from Lausanne change at Zürich and St. Margrethen. Alternatively the NJ calls at Feldkirch (d 2208) which you can reach from Zürich via Buchs.

Aegean Airlines connect both Geneva and Kefalonia through Athens. You can also get Easyjet on many days direct from the Malpensa airport in Milan to Kefalonia, doing the train from Lausanne to Milan.

Best way for such travel is look up the minor airport arrivals and departures, Kefalonia in this case, for the days of the week you want, even now, and identify which airline flies there and where from. Then check their own websites forward for the dates you want to find if they are still running. Unfortunately the old big book of everything that major libraries and travel agents used to stock no longer is published.

It doesn't appear that easyJet operate Malpensa-Kefalonia or Zakynthos in October.
Aegean has a daily service ATH 1315-1430 KEF, but it's hard to get a same-day connection into that from CH.

I didn't think a 0710 departure from MXP was very enticing, a 4-hour car journey from Lausanne involving the Simplon car-shuttle.

There is a great Italian restaurant, Samarcanda, in the Case Nuove village by MXP, where a lot of the hotels are.

The hourly S50 will take you to the airport from the cross-border line without having to pass through Milan. Alternatively, Gallarate station, again on the cross-border line from Domodossola, is only 10-15 minutes' taxi from MXP T2.

There doesn't seem to be any connection from EC40 before Milano Centrale.
It stops at Stresa but no onward connection, and the direct buses from Domodossola/Stresa to Malpensa have all stopped by then.

The car journey from Lausanne was based on Google Maps searches, with car shuttle Brig-Domodossola at 1922/2222/0022.
But if an overnight stop in Milan works, that's obviously to be preferred.
Luckily the 3-month closure of the Simplon route at Stresa will be over by then.
