On taxis late at night there is usually a sign saying no food or drink and also a disclaimer that if a passenger vomits all over the car they pay a surcharge or something along those lines for the taxi to be cleaned.

Knowing the state trains arrive at the depots especially on a Friday and Saturday night were party goers have vomited all over the floor and left their half eaten Mcdonalds to be trampled into the floor, I think there should be a similar rule for trains as there is for taxis.

I think the taxi driver has a rather more captive perpetrator. Enough people on here complain tickets are never checked on late night trains. Who's going to enforce this?

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it's G4S Vomitman!!!!

I concur with this in principle but how are you going to enforce it? How are you going to stop my wife and I boarding the last train out of Waterloo with a McDonalds when at that time of night the station is deserted?

What about trains that serve food aboard? Or even the sleeper?

Correct !! How on earth are the likes of me ( who actually work on the trains ) going to enforce that !!! Its a recipe for confrontation .....!!

Well exactly! Are people going to be thrown off trains because they are half way through a Big Mac? The obvious answer is industrial strength bin bags taped to the internal fittings of the train. Peer pressure would ensure that most of the litter ended up in the bin bags.

Must admit there was a passenger last night right next to my cab who was eating one.....the smell of it made me go and get one myself when I got into my base !!

Once in a while they are actually quite nice! However a carriage full of bin bags would surely make life much easier for cleaners.

We actually have cleaners who jump on at regular intervals.....though very few at night

I see quite a few drivers sitting in their cab at a terminus awaiting departure with food from a certain fast food chain. I think any ban would annoy the drivers too... ;)

Northern Rail

Given how good the night life in Leeds and Manchester is you'd think that Northern Rail would employ late night cleaning staff. Yes I know it's not the best job in the world but it would surely help maintenance staff at Newton Heath and Neville Hill?

Already have teams of cleaners at those depots......

Interestingly, one of the trains I ran earlier on tonite attracted an auditor from TFGM who zeroed in on the interior cleaning......

Fair enough then. I do wonder whether the OP has rather blown things out of proportion!

Do the audtiors introduce themselves to the train crew? I'm surprised that they chose what I would imagine to be a rather quiet night.

As it happens, I approached him as I had spotted his ID - just as well really as the TOC also gets marked on quality of staff running the train. I actually issued a UPFN right next to him as well - so at least there could be no complaints of not seeking out fare dodgers !!

How much is a UPFN? I'm amazed how many people chance it, especially in the North where fares are already very cheap.

I've been on plenty of long distance busses where hot food and drink are banned. How it is enforced is another matter.

I actually made that point to the miscreant!!!

They get a UPFN for the amount they should have paid....but if they fail to cough up , then court fees kick in. As an aside to this, one very sharp eyed NR employee spotted a fake season ticket not so long back, which resulted in a £2k fine.....the miscreant was named and shamed in our internal mag and was actually a fairly high ranking employee at his place of work !!

What time was this then? A bit unfair to be targetting late night trains when they know they will be subjected to all sorts of crap trhown around on them especially after the turnaround cleaners have been on.

Probably around 7pm ish.....so not late night by any stretch of the imagination. But the same train had already worked the peak out of town just before that anyway....

I concur with much of what you are saying but surely bench marking a train at say 14.00 would be a pointless exercise?

Ahh ok, was just trying to relate the time by when you had posted. So had it come back in and was then checked? Had the turn around cleaners already been on?

I wouldnt say that, you need to get a full picture of how the TOC ustilises its cleaning staff all day. BUT there is no point in auditing a train when it has just come into its terminal station and the turnaround cleaners have not been on it yet. This gives rather skewed and false results.

I recall seeing people regularly boarding the up sleepers at Penzance having been in possession of fish and chips bought in the town a few minutes previously.

Not that I was aware of......but I did have my hands full with other things anyway such as the aforementioned fare dodger and also a couple of door recycles/pass com checks due to train unable to draw power, which does get the adrenaline going !!!!

I don't think any TOC is going to put travelling cleaners on trains that are only about 2 or less hours from the overnight depot , they will probably claim for starters that would mean the depot staff would have too little work :D

Reverting to the OP, a middle ground between the up-close-and-personal of a taxi and a free-for-all 8-coach DOO train is the urban bus.

For those towns and cities with late night and all-night buses, is there ever any attempt these days by drivers or security staff to prevent passengers boarding buses with hot food, booze or in a completely legless intoxicated state?

It's many years since I used the All-Night buses in Manchester, and binge drinking seems to have come a long way since then.
In the 1970s, up to deregulation in the mid-80s, all of GMT's Night Service buses in Manchester carried a two person crew, even after OPO had become almost universal in the city (it wasn't always 2-Man crew either, I remember one particularly fierce Irish conductress on the 28 to Bolton).
At that time, late-night eating options were heavily biased towards chips and gravy in a polystyrene tray (McDonalds outlets were few & far between, and kebabs were still a bit exotic and foreign for many).
Some bus conductors & drivers would screen passengers boarding their bus at Piccadilly Gardens, resulting in crowds of passengers wolfing down their chips before being allowed onto the bus, and piles of stinking refuse on the bus station after departure.
I also saw some totally wasted, unable-to-stand passengers being denied boarding.
Not to say there wasn't frequent disorder, fighting and puking on the night buses at weekend, but I guess there could be some risk mitigation.

I guess none of this happens on the buses these days.
